John's obituary
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of John Charles Ufford on December 23, 2024. John was a beloved father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and visionary CEO who left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was deeply cherished for his warmth, kindness, and infectious laughter.
Born on July 18 in Hanover, New Hampshire, to Len and Jill Ufford, John grew up in a close-knit family that included his older brother, Dean. The Ufford family moved from New Hampshire to Eugene, Oregon, before settling in Portland, where John attended Wilson High School.
After high school, John dedicated ten years of his career to McMenamins, where he played an instrumental role in launching products across 52 locations and developing training programs, cocktail menus, and pricing strategies. His passion and expertise in the spirits industry led him to become the Corporate Beverage Manager, overseeing operations across Oregon and Washington.
In 2004, John founded Indio Spirits (now known as Rose City Distilling), showcasing his talent for crafting flavored vodkas. In 2005, he welcomed industry professional Robert G. Turner as a partner, and together, they transformed Rose City Distilling into one of the Northwest’s largest and most respected distilleries. As Chairman and CEO, John was involved in every facet of the business, gaining admiration for his professional achievements and awards and his unwavering dedication to helping others.
Above all, John’s greatest love and joy was his daughter, Shivani. He aimed to create a harmonious life, balancing his business aspirations with his desire to support her. John was driven and intentional in leaving a lasting legacy for her and her lineage. His pride in Shivani was evident in every conversation, and he cherished their bond.
A passionate golfer, John attended golf pro school in San Diego as a young adult. He organized and hosted an annual golf tournament for four years and actively participated in tournaments across Portland. A dedicated sports fan, John loved the Oregon Ducks and held 50-yard line season tickets for many years, sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends. When not working or spending time with family, he cherished moments with his close friends, whom he adored.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Food Share of Lincoln County in honor of John’s passion for helping those in need, his love of food, and his fondness for the Oregon Coast.
The Ufford family extends heartfelt gratitude to John’s friends—Matt Chumbley, Gabe Schomus, Tommy Van Hoon, Mark White, and James Zea—who went above and beyond for John and the family, providing support in the days preceding and following his death.
John will be lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire those he touched.
