The last time I saw grand grad would have technically been the day he passed - the last time I really saw him, the way he always was would have been the Monday before he passed. I was finishing up some tasks before leaving for a trip out of state. I dropped by to see my grandma and grandgrad. As I was leaving, they were both also leaving to run some errands. I specifically remember my grandma needed to go to Fedex. As I was driving away, I slowed down at the light and waited for them to pull up beside me. I was listening to an Elvis song with my windows down on a beautiful sunny May Day. They pulled up beside me, both smiling because they didn't know I had waited for them. As my light turned green I remember looking over to them and waving at them goodbye. I had no idea it would really be such a permanent goodbye with grand grad. I cherish that memory - seeing him out and about and happy and living to see a gorgeous spring day.
In response to "When was the last time you spent time with John?"

Dad a few days before he passed.  Still laughing and loving the animals.  Did good until the last morning and was talking to me saying he didn’t feel too good and was going back to bed.  He wanted a cup of tea, so I got that and took it into him and he was virtually gone then, five minutes later.  So I called the kids and the nurse. They were all with him when he passed peacefully,  couldn’t have gone a better way.  Thank God.
