John's obituary

John Jefferson Steger, 71, passed away on July 25, 2025, in Houston, Texas. Born on June 25, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, John lived a life marked by deep faith, unwavering optimism, and a profound love for his family.

John began his academic journey at Ouachita Baptist University, where he was a member of the college swim team. He later transferred to Baylor University, earning his Bachelor's of Business Administration in 1978. In 1979 he married the love of his life and mother of his children, Melissa. He adored her from the minute he laid eyes on her and together they shared 31 years of marriage and three daughters. John's professional career spanned over two decades as an expert in oilfield flow and density measurement. He dedicated himself to selling Micro Motion Coriolis meters and took great pride in building lasting relationships within the oilfield services industry. His intellectual curiosity extended beyond his work—he had a keen interest in studying Peak Oil and often engaged in thoughtful discussions on the subject.

A man of deep Christian faith, John found wisdom and inspiration through studying the Bible. He had a particular passion for the Book of Revelation and cherished teaching Sunday school to high school students. As a devoted member of Grace Fellowship in Katy, Texas, he found great joy in singing with the Praise and Worship Band. His daughters fondly recall how he consistently emphasized the importance of grace and forgiveness, often quoting his mother’s words: “Love people the most when they deserve it the least.” The parable of the Prodigal Son held special meaning for him and shaped much of how he lived his life. His wisdom offered comfort during difficult times; he always seemed to know just what to say.

John’s magnetic personality made everyone around him feel seen and valued. His contagious belly laugh could brighten any room, and his optimism helped others find light even in difficult times. He was a steadfast encourager to his daughters who remember him as their biggest cheerleader, always reminding them of their unique worth and potential. He prayed for them daily, taught them about Jesus’ love, and pointed them toward Christ from an early age.

Music was woven into the fabric of John’s life. He loved to sing and play guitar, often serenading his daughters with James Taylor songs at bedtime. He also found peace near the ocean—drawn to sailboats, surfing, seafood, and long days spent on the beach.

John was deeply involved in his daughters’ lives—attending countless cheerleading practices, gymnastics meets, football games, swim meets and other sporting events. Watching them participate brought him immense joy.

He loved motorcycles and had an adventurous spirit that made him the life of every party. Outgoing by nature, he made friends wherever he went.

John is lovingly remembered by his daughters and their husbands: Lauren (Blair) Bundy, Amy (Jason) Velasquez, and Katelyn (Taylor) May; his grandchildren: Sloane Velasquez, Beau Bundy, Hallie Velasquez, Walker Bundy, Colton Bundy, Ava Jane Bundy, Oakley May, Evelyn Velasquez, and Bretton May.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Gordon Steger of Richardson, TX.

John Jefferson Steger leaves behind a legacy of faith, joy, wisdom, and unconditional love. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

The family will hold a private remembrance and Celebration of Life in Galveston, Texas at a later date.
