John's obituary
Honoring the Life of John Slater
There are no words to fully capture the depth of our loss as a family and as a community. On Thursday afternoon, John Slater passed away doing what he loved, gardening in the Unity Meditation Garden. He is survived by his beloved wife, BJ, his daughter, Nicole, and his son, Ryan.
Just last week, he told BJ, “I have the perfect life.” And he truly did.
John’s deep connection to Spirit and his unwavering commitment to serving his Higher Power was the foundation of his life. He started every day in prayer, saying, “Your will, not mine.” He often reminded those around him, “Breathe in God, breathe out love.” These words were more than a mantra—they were how he lived, inspiring everyone who knew him to walk with faith, love, and grace.
John, who saw himself as a “Simple Guy,” was a man of unwavering integrity, kindness, and dedication to service. His sense of humor, generosity, and warm spirit touched so many lives. Whether he was sharing a joke or discussing his latest garden project, he left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
At this time, the family kindly requests no food or monetary donations.
For those who wish to honor John’s legacy, donations can be made to the John Slater Meditation Garden Memorial Fund at Unity in Marin. This garden, his magnum opus, was his labor of love—a breathtaking space designed to bring people together in nature’s beauty. Contributions will help preserve and maintain this hidden gem for generations to come.
A guestbook has been created for those who would like to share their memories and stories.
John was a radiant light in our lives, and his presence will be deeply missed. A Celebration of Life will be held in the coming weeks, with details to follow.
Let us take a moment to reflect on and celebrate the perfect life he so joyfully lived.
