John was an awesome Christian man, a great family man and father, as well as a brother in Christ. I remember riding around his mother-in-laws RV with our family and his so we had a full house. The crazy things we would say and do inside and we will park and go for a walk along these railroad tracks and through bushes and things. I don’t know why one night at our house? We were talking about a bus and it had to do at the schools it was probably around 11 PM and we went out to look for it. John could praise and worship like nobody’s business. He was a great influence on me and my relationship with Jesus Christ. We would hang out together when he had Johnny Appleseed, the landscaping business, and he was a very hard worker and taught his kids to do the same. Lajla, his wife is the same way, just as crazy. One night I don’t know why we did it but my hair was a little longer and she gave me a perm. I felt like a Greek goddess. That’s without drinking or doing anything just normal shen-EVANS-agins (shenanigans)!!!

I remember when our families went to Pismo Beach in our van and it says stoop by anytime because I’m a chiropractor. We rented a hovercraft, which was the only one they had JOHN took it out with JOSHUA, however, when the wave went out, he let up off the gas and the hover graph hit the bottom, and they both went flying forward, with JOSHUA going over the dash in the window, and into the water, and John hitting himself on the console. Next thing you know the park ranger got my wife my wife’s hanging out the window driving down the beach looking for me so that I could drive the hovercraft back. Later on the ambulance is at the top parked, and we were parked next to it and the guy got out who was from UCLA a big guy who played football and asked if I would give him an adjustment. I said if you take care of my friend JOHN and bandage him up, I will give you an adjustment in my van, and he agreed.  I sure do miss him and doing all those fun things with his family. I love you, John and your family rest in peace and I know you’re looking down on us laughing, as well as praising and worshiping.

John was dear to my heart.   I picked him up for Sunday School and church, was his Sunday School teacher and  Youth leader.   It was my great joy to see how he served God in his adult years and the many people that he influenced for God.    I miss him, but anticipate a great reunion in Heaven.    Sympathy to his wife, children and grand children.   He was a great guy.

I have the most fond memories of my buddy, John. Starting in 7th grade where we went rolling skating every Friday night with our group of friends. Going to my home afterwards for hot cocoa and cookies that Mom made. John was one of my best friends. I loved him dearly. John was just so kind, funny, humble, caring. He was everything wonderful. I have his picture on my computer so I can see his smile from time to time. I miss him and was so sad he wouldn’t be sitting at my table for our 50th reunion. He was an amazing shining light and I know his life wasn’t easy. My parents adored him too. I’ll see you in Heaven John when that day comes. I’ve always remembered you in my heart and with such joyful memories. I love and miss you dear friend. I bet you’re cracking everyone up in God’s heaven.

With much love,

Lori Grischott Germer

John you prayed for me while I lay dying in a nursing home and soon after. I started getting better to the bewilderment of my doctors. I've always thought that your caring and prayers saved me. May the Lord keep you and protect those you left behind from pain. God bless your soul 🙏

Lajla Shackleford and Family,
We were blessed to know and love John. He always went out of his way to greet us when in public, and was a precious part of our family in private. We will miss him, while we wait to join him in Glory. Bless you all. Randy and Leslie Stringer.

Dear Shakelford Family- I don't have words. John is that friend who went roller skating with us every Friday, come to my house for hot cocoa and treats, was in school with me through Stockton Junior High and Stagg. We kept in touch and loved each other forever. :-( I was so ecstatic to see him at our HS reunions. Will hold it so close in my heart when he had his motorcycle accident and we went to visit him at St. Joe's. There he was, all wrapped up and cracking jokes and making light of a serious accident. I remember getting the call from Greg Short that he had been hit, a Greg witnessed it! Not being able to sleep until we could get to the hospital. Dear John, I was so hoping to see you at out next reunion and sit at the same table again. I'm so sad, but I know you were always such and inspiration to so many people and you really knew how to live. Rest in Peace dear friend, and I guess I'll have to wait and see you in Heaven.

May I share my story with you about beloved John, an awesome friend I will always cherish. On our Haiti mission, he was building a chicken coop there. I had an astonishing vision of our Father through him. I was glued to it. He made an amazing character of himself especially in Christlike temperament. He taught deaf workers in a building project and that was like God was doing with us. He was kind, patient, loveable, and in charge. I loved watching him. I was grateful for that. He was an excellent example of Christ. Nevertheless I say, I will miss him so much. Thank John and FATHER, THANK YOU FOR YOUR POWER AND DAILY PRESENCE.
