John L. Scott, former Oak Park, Illinois Businessman and Retired Police Officer Dead at 66.

John Leslie Scott, 66, of Oak Park, Illinois, passed away at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois on Monday, November 12, 2018, one day after his 66th Birthday from a long battle with heart/kidney disease. John was the son of the late Robert L. Scott and Carmen Ann Montgomery Scott-Smith who followed her son in death twenty-one days later; Brother of Barbara Scott-Johnson (Jim) of Georgia and the late Bobette Scott - Pippenger (Phil) of Texas. John was raised in Oak Park, Illinois and attended Grace Lutheran Grade School in River Forest, Illinois where he was a champion figure skater. He attended Oak Park River Forest High School in Oak Park Illinois where John was fluent in the German language and was often called upon to translate the written and verbal language which he enjoyed. In 1972 John received an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Triton College in River Grove, Illinois. After passing intense qualification testing and receiving offers from the Illinois State Police, Cook County Sheriffs Department, West Chicago Illinois Police Department and Forest Park, Illinois Police, he joined the Forest Park Police Department in January 1977. John served as a Patrolman, Range Instructor, Auxiliary Police Instructor and New Recruit Training Officer. In 1989, he was promoted to Sergeant and continued to work until his retirement in 2001. In the early and mid 1980’s he managed the family jewelry business - RL Scott Jewelers in Oak Park, Illinois. This business was first opened in 1947 by his Father Robert L. Scott, a Watchmaker and Master Jeweler. After the elder Mr. Scott passed, John sold the business which allowed his mother, Carmen to retire to their much loved, Eureka Springs, Arkansas family residence. At the age of twelve John first realized his calling to help his community by joining DeMolay International, a philanthropy and service orientated organization. He remained active in DeMolay until, as an adult, he joined The River Forest - Austin Masonic Lodge. John was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. After retiring from police work and until his death he founded and managed a successful firearms business. John was also a philanthropist for animal care and animal rights, devoting much time and money to various animal welfare groups. Additionally, John was a race car enthusiast who engineered and constructed two professional race cars. John was cremated November 20, 1018 at Arbor Point Crematory DuPage County in West Chicago IL.
