John's obituary

John Kevin Polhemus died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022. He was born on June 21, 1956, the third of nine children to Keith and June Polhemus. John was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Kenneth, Joel, Steven and sister Jane. He is survived by his wife Sheila, sons Daniel and Nathan, daughter-in-law Carrie, grandson Austin, brothers Michael and Mark, sisters Lynn and Jennifer and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

John graduated from Crossland Vocational school where he learned his trade as a printer. He worked at a few small print shops before settling at WSSC where he worked at an in house print shop. In 1975, he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and married Sheila Earnest on August 2nd and they were faithfully married for 46 years. Their two sons, Nathan and Daniel came along in 1980 and 1986 respectively and were their main focus in life. He was very patient with his boys, sitting them down when there was a problem and reasoning with them keeping Jehovah’s expectations of us in mind. They could be long talks and during one with Daniel, he said “Can’t you just beat me and get it over with?”

When his grandson, Austin, was born in 2010, he became John’s pride and joy. At an early age, John loved going to the Kingdom Hall to learn what the Bible teaches. He enjoyed giving comments at the meetings and associating with like minded friends. He dedicated his life to Jehovah God and could always be found volunteering at Assemblies and Conventions working in food service and making drama props. He had a tender heart for those who were disabled or older ones, making it a point to engage them in conversations. He took his assignments seriously whether it was making territory cards or making reminder calls to those who had parts on the meetings or cleaning assignments.

John was cheerful and had a quick witted humor that he became known for, making everyone he met laugh and enjoy his friendship. He also was extremely creative and inventive. He enjoyed photography and even started a woodworking business designing puzzles, jigs, pictures, signs, boxes and many useful items. He worked on home projects like building kitchen cabinets and a personalized desk. Many people were impressed by his incredibly organized workshop. His woodwork was sold at upscale art and craft shows and festivals. He wrote many “how to” articles for scroll sawn items for scroll saw magazines and many of his pieces were featured in “how to” scroll saw books that are sold worldwide. After retiring from selling at craft shows and festivals he sold his patterns to scroll saw catalogs.

He enjoyed participating in the preaching of the good news of God’s Kingdom with emphasis on hope for our future bringing God’s original purpose of a paradise earth for all mankind. We look forward to his resurrection in that paradise that Jesus sacrificed his life for on our behalf as promised in Revelation 21:3 and 4 where it shows that there will no longer be pain, suffering or death. It will be a thing of the past.
