John's obituary
August 15, 1921-December 3, 2018
John passed from this earth on Monday, December 3rd 2018 at Las Palmas Assisted Living Facility; Laguna Woods, CA; where he had lived for the last six years. His daughter Diana and her husband Roger were by his side at his passing.
John was born to Victor & Anna (SKUBAN) Pevoar on August 15th, 1921 in Barnesboro, PA. He was the fifth of their eighth children.
His first job was in the Coal Mines of PA with his Dad. He knew he didn’t want to do that the rest of his life so followed his older brother Mike
and sister, Helen to Michigan; where he worked for several companies before enlisting in the Coast Guard in September of 1942 to serve his country during WWII. He served for almost four years. After leaving the military he worked at several markets as a meat cutter, which is where he met his future wife, Dorothy ‘Carolyn’ Soop. After a short courtship they were married in Detroit at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Detroit on May 31, 1947. Their first child, Marilyn Ann arrived on March 19, 1948 and their second daughter Peggy ‘Diana’ was born July 27, 1949. In 1950 John & Carolyn purchased their first home in Detroit. He took on a part time job of working for Frank’s Nurseries during the holidays. At that time Franks only had two stores. John ended up working for Franks full time and worked his way up to eventually become a buyer and traveled all over the world on buying trips. John & Carolyn along with their daughter Diana moved to an apartment in 1968 after their oldest daughter Marilyn married in 1967. Their youngest daughter Diana married Roger Porte in August of 1970. He continued work at Frank’s Nursery and Crafts until he retired in 1984. Never having the opportunity to finish high school, John took it on his self to go to night school and earn his diploma. In 1985 John & Carolyn moved to Fort Myers, FL to be near their daughter Marilyn and husband Jim Talbot. John was never one to sit idle and while living in FL, he worked at a golf course as a ground’s maintenance employee. He loved being outdoors and was an avid gardener. They did not live in FL long. In 1986 they moved to Sun City, AZ near Phoenix and also purchased property in Bullhead City, AZ where they built a home and moved there in 1987. Again, John found work at one the casinos across the river in Laughlin, NV. He wanted to keep busy. Their yard had over 200 cactus which he painstakingly planted and often changed. He enjoyed working in his yard. He was forced to retire after falling, but still enjoyed working in his yard. His wife of almost 63 years passed away, April 20, 2010. He continued to live in Bullhead for over a year and then in 2012 made the decision to move near his daughter, Diana & Family in southern California until his passing.
John gave his daughters the love of traveling. Every year he would take his family on vacation. He worked long hours so he could afford to do this. Both daughters really enjoy traveling to this day. His daughter Diana has inherited his love of gardening. Even when he moved to the Assisted Living Facility John had plants on his patio. If you asked him what a certain plant was, if he didn’t know he would make up something. Everyone who knew him always said what a positive attitude he had and if you were sad or discouraged before talking to him, that feeling was gone after you called him. He would always cheer you up.
He loved spending time with his two grandsons, John Porte, III (Heather) and Ryan Michael Porte (Nia) and took great pride in his three great grandchildren; John’s two sons Maxwell & Jackson and Ryan’s daughter, Grace.
John was predeceased by his loving wife Carolyn, his parents and brothers Michael, Victor & Andrew and sisters Mary, Ann, Helen & Margaret; and brother-in laws Mikey Holuta and Hugo Carnevali. He is survived by his two daughters Marilyn and Diana; grandson’s John and Ryan and their families; sister-in-law, Janice Pevoar, and many nieces and nephews.
Dad will be greatly missed, but we are so thankful to have had him as our Dad. We love you Dad.
There will be no services as he requested and if you wish to make a donation, we suggest Salvation Army, St. Jude’s or the charity of your choice.
