John was born in El Paso, Texas to Juan Ricardo Patiño and Otilia Hernández de Patiño. He was the oldest of 5 children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Eduardo and Samuel. He is survived by his wife, Armida; daughters, Edna and Elisa; and sisters, Otilia and Martha.
