Mike's obituary
In Memory of John Michael “Mike” Pannell
May 18, 1972 – October 20, 2022
John Michael “Mike” Pannell was born on May 18, 1972, in Kansas City, Missouri. He passed away on October 20, 2022, at the age of 50, after years of struggle with addiction and homelessness.
Mike’s life was not defined by the challenges he faced, but by the heart he carried through them. He was funny, tenacious, and deeply human. He loved the Bible, math, science, animals, music, and laughter. He dreamed of getting well and of reconnecting with the people and world he loved.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, LG, his sister, Jami L. Pannell; his father, John E. Pannell (now deceased); his niece and nephew, Ruby and Sam Petersen; and his brother-in-law, Jeff Petersen. He was proceeded in death by his mother, Carol J. Pannell, as well as his grandparents. His family remembers him not for his struggles, but for his kindness, his humor, and his capacity for love.
Mike’s death was not inevitable — it was preventable. He was failed by a society that too often looks away from those who are hurting. Addiction is an illness. Homelessness is not a real choice. We must do better. We need treatment, compassion, and real support for those living on the margins.
As we mourn his loss, we remember the countless others who suffer unseen. May Mike’s story open hearts and inspire action — to care more, to judge less, and to reach out before it’s too late.
Rest now, Mike. You are finally home. You mattered.
