John's obituary

John Joseph Olivero, 82, of Holly Hill, FL, passed away on September 16, 2023. He was born on January 18, 1941, in Yonkers, New York. His family subsequently moved to Miami Springs - Hialeah FL in 1947, where he grew up with his father, John Joseph Olivero Sr, and mother, Adele Iwanski, who have since passed. John's sister, Sandra  Albrecht (John) of NC, and niece and nephew Kristi and Donald survive him, as does his loving wife, Kathleen Platt Olivero, of FL and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Suzanne Platt, of GA. John and Kathleen's four children include: Lisa Olivero of FL, Mary Connor of TX, Michael Olivero (Angie) of CO, and David Olivero  (Margaret) of CO. In addition, John leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Skye,  Casey,  and Lucas.

John had an illustrious educational background, graduating from Hialeah High School in 1959 and heading to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University - where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics. He went on to achieve a Master of Science in Physics from William & Mary College in Virginia, and then a PhD in Aeronomy (Atmospheric Physics) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor MI.

Throughout his career, John made significant contributions to the field of space physics. He worked at NASA-Langley during his Master's program at William & Mary between 1963 and 1966. He then served as an Associate Professor of Physics and Engineering while pursuing his PhD at the University of Michigan between 1967 and 1970, and followed with a Post-Doctorate teaching position at the University of Florida in Gainesville - between 1970 and 1972, Next, John took a position became a Professor of Atmospheric Physics within the Departments of Meteorology and of Electrical Engineering (the Ionospheric Research Lab) at Penn State University, where he taught between 1972 and 1994. Upon retiring from Penn State, John returned to Florida, to serve as the Chair of the Physical Sciences Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL, from 1994 to 2016, and then became Professor Emeritus in Physics and Director of the Center for Space and Atmospheric Research.

John found joy in his faith and was a member and past Board of Trustees officer for Unity Church of Daytona Beach. He also had a passion for singing and was a former choir member at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College, PA. John's hobbies included singing tenor in various church choirs over the years.

A memorial service will be held at Unity Church of Daytona Beach at a future date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Unity Church of Daytona Beach. The funeral arrangements are entrusted to Lohmans Funeral Home in Ormond Beach, FL.
