Jack's obituary
John Mocko, more affectionately called Jack, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2024, at the age of 76, surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Palmer, MA, and raised in Stafford, CT, but he spent much of his life in Wales, MA. He was the son of John "Dedko" Mocko and Barbara M. Lanizzani. He was a graduate of Tantasqua Regional High School, and later attended Quinnipiac College and Cerritos Junior College. Jack's life was a testament to love, laughter, and dedication. He was a two time cancer survivor who bravely fought the last three years. His courage is unmatched and admired by all who knew him.
Jack's heart was always with his family. He adored spending time with his loved ones at their cherished lake house, his "little piece of heaven." He enjoyed bonfires and leisure pontoon boat rides. His culinary favorites, especially cannolis, jelly sticks, and ice cream floats, were always a treat at family gatherings.
Jack's early years were marked by a deep passion for sports, particularly his beloved New York Yankees, New York Giants, and UConn Huskies. He was not just a fan; he lived and breathed the excitement of the games, sharing countless moments of joy and camaraderie with family and friends. His love extended to the baseball diamond, where he served as a coach, imparting not only skills but also the values of teamwork and sportsmanship to countless young athletes.
A man of many talents, Jack was a skilled collector, his home filled with cherished memorabilia that told the story of a life well-lived. His witty sense of humor was legendary, his quick wit bringing smiles and laughter to all who knew him. He had a zest for life, which he expressed through his love for hats, craft beers, car shows, outdoor concerts, and dancing. His passion for music was a soundtrack to his life, providing rhythm and melody to his adventures. To all who knew him, he was dedicated, kind, supportive, hard working, generous, handy, and modest.
Jack joined his dad in 1969, at J. Mocko and Son, and presently owned Mocko's Propane Gas. As a business owner, Jack was known for his integrity, modesty, and kindness. His entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic were admired by all who had the pleasure of working with him.
As proud member of the Stafford community, he demonstrated his commitment by volunteering for countless civic organizations. Jack was an active member of the Stafford Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Stafford Ambulance, PZC, and The Boys and Girls Club. He spent many Friday nights working at Stafford Motor Speedway as a fireman.
Jack's legacy is one of love, laughter, and dedication. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years- Barbara; his children- Erin and William Utermarck, Greg and Hannah Mocko, and Liz and Greg Carreira; his grandchildren- Ethan, Stella, Andrew, Caleb, Tessa, Hazel, Bode, and Simon. His large extended family includes his two sisters- Jane and Steve Brown, and Karen Goodrich; and several nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Burial services will be private. A Memorial Mass for Jack will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 1:00p.m, at St. Edward Church in Stafford Springs. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the CSF of Stafford Springs, P.O. Box 25, Stafford Springs, CT 06076. When making donations, please specify Stafford Boys and Girls Club in memory of Jack Mocko.
Jack will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace, his memory a beacon of light and love for all. #MOCKOSTRONG
