John's obituary

John McAtee passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025.

Born on March 24, 1959, John was raised in Washougal, Washington, as part of a large and lively family of nine siblings — a rowdy, close-knit group whose influence shaped his strong work ethic, loyalty, and straightforward nature. As an adult, he settled in Camas, Washington, where he raised his own family and became a familiar, steady presence in both communities.

John was an avid outdoorsman throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, clamming, crabbing, and spending time in nature in any season. He passed those traditions on to his children and later to his grandchildren, all of whom adored him. Many of their best memories were made with him on the riverbank, the beach, the woods, or gathered around a campfire listening to his many stories.

He was known for keeping an open home and hosting friends and family for barbecues, celebrations, and everyday gatherings. John valued community, self-reliance, and teaching others — qualities reflected in the many people he guided and supported over the years.

John is survived by his wife, Kim McAtee; and his children Kaylyn Campbell (McAtee), Steve Faler, Curt Faler, and Misty Leonard. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren.

John will be remembered for his steady presence, his commitment to family, and the outdoor traditions he carried forward through multiple generations.
