John Anthony Mason II (Johnny), of Honolulu, HI, a Licensed Alcohol Counselor, Licensed Social Worker and Behavioral Therapist, died unexpectedly on December 29, 2019 at the age of 42.

Johnny is survived by his parents, Dan Mason (Seattle, WA) and Mary Mason (Golden, CO) and by his brother, Tyler Mason (Golden, CO) and sister Rebecca Pommer (San Antonio, TX), as well as by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Johnny was born in New Port Beach, California on December 20, 1977. He spent his formative years in Colorado and graduated from Fairview HS in 1996. In 2000, he graduated from Mesa State University with a degree in Psychology, and he received his Masters at Colorado State University a few years later.

From a very early age, Johnny distinguished himself as one who both felt and thought deeply. He was always a child of the earth, enjoying the outdoors and the beauty around him, and he recognized and honored the spirit world that it presented to him. It was not uncommon for Johnny to visit Native American sweat lodges, or to go off by himself camping for days at a time.

Johnny lived life fully, embracing each experience for all that it had to offer. He liked to meditate, exercise, walk his dogs, and listen to music. He once shared that at one point in his life his morning routine included looking at YouTube videos of teens skateboarding, set to music. He said he didn’t know why but watching teens doing skateboarding tricks was relaxing and meditative for him. Most recently, Johnny found that call toward meditative experiences nourished by fire dancing on the Hawaiian beaches.

Johnny was a thinker, and at times exasperated friends and loved ones by his over analysis of any and all things that sparked his interest—books, religion, love, or even the greatness of the Denver Broncos. He had a keen sense of humor and loved to laugh and share that laughter with others. Johnny also had an uncanny ability to make each person he interacted with feel his sincere interest and concern. He elevated and honored those he met. One could not help but feel that he cared.

Through his own struggles and challenges, Johnny found his way to sobriety and put his experiences and his natural caring inclinations to good use, finding his vocation as a counselor. He will be remembered by many as an a devoted member and leader in AA. He was truly gifted at his work, leading countless people towards wholeness, sobriety, and a better life. There is no telling how many lives he saved through his devotion to helping others. Johnny truly was a healer.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

A memorial service scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on February 15 at the Denver Fire Department Convention Center, 12 Lakeside Lane, Denver, Colorado 80212. All are welcome.
