John's obituary

John C. Krysa was born to Leonard and Matilda Krysa in Chicago Illinois on 16 August 1953 and went to be with the Lord on 5 February 2023. He passed peacefully in Indian Land, South Carolina with his wife Lois at his side. He is survived by his wife Lois, son John D. Krysa, daughter Becky K. Drozdz, daughter-in-law Christine Krysa, son-in-law Craig Drozdz, and granddaughters Jillian and Allison Krysa.

John grew up in Chicago were he was active in Boy Scouts and Army ROTC at Lane Tech High School. Upon graduation in 1975 from the University of Illinois at Chicago he was commissioned through the ROTC program as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry, in the United States Army. Throughout his 20 year career in the Army he served in many billets throughout the United States and overseas to include Berlin, Ft. Benning, Stevens Point, Ft. Leavenworth, Würzburg, Schweinfurt, and the Pentagon. As a Joint Specialty Officer his final assignments were in the Pentagon as the J-3 Counter Narcotics Operations Officer on the Joint Staff and as Acting Director, Inter-American Region, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1996.

During his military service, John took advantage of being stationed all over and took many great trips with his family. They skied in the Austrian and Swiss Alps, they ate bratwurst at Octoberfest, and even swam in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Yugoslavia. One of the greatest experiences he shared was taking his kids into East Germany on the day of reunification.

Following retirement from the Army, John served for several years in the private sector as a management consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton, and EDS, conducting process improvement and business process reengineering. John missed civil service and he returned to federal service in 2001 where he worked on the Joint Staff and then Washington Headquarters Services at the GS-15 level. John was in the Pentagon during the attacks of 9/11.

In 2006 John was appointed to the Senior Executive Service as the Chief, Records Automation Section for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was responsible for FBI Records Automation including document and evidence scanning, records conversion, integration of a Records Management Application into the FBI enterprise architecture and certification of IT systems for compliance with records management laws, federal regulations, and NARA policy. While at the FBI he oversaw the transfer of FBI records to a new facility in Winchester, VA. John retired from the FBI 2012.

Following retirement John and Lois moved full time to their house on Lake Gaston. While in retirement he served in several executive consultant billets, including as President and Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Certified Records Managers.

John enjoyed travelling throughout retirement and he and Lois cruised in Alaska, where they helicoptered up to a glacier and went dogsledding. They voyaged through the Panama Canal, Mediterranean, Baltic, Normandy, and much more!

Unfortunately, John was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form T-cell Lymphoma. He fought hard, but lost the battle.
