John's obituary

John David Kozlowski

December 2, 1947 - April 10, 2024

John David Kozlowski, aged 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at his cherished cabin in Murphy, North Carolina, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later residing in Sarasota, Florida, John bravely faced a long battle with MDS (myelodysplastic syndromes), a rare form of blood cancer, succumbing to complications related to the disease.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 50 years, Lorraine, three children: Jaime, Michael John, and Lee Ann, his sister Margo, and four half-siblings: Janice, Neil, Brent, and Brian.

John had a long and rewarding career in auto body repair and painting. He enjoyed restoring hot rods and vintage cars, and loved going to car shows. Known for his handiness, he generously assisted family, friends, and neighbors with a myriad of projects, earning gratitude and respect throughout his community.

A lover of art and craftsmanship, John enjoyed restoring artworks discovered at flea markets and antique auctions. He also crafted birdhouses, lighted bottles, wooden Christmas trees based on a template designed by Jimmy Kansler, and other crafts. Together with Lorraine, they beautifully adorned their property in Murphy, creating a magical and inviting mountain retreat.

John loved music of all kinds, frequently enjoying tunes from an iPod gifted from his daughter Jaime who compiled many years of “Father’s Day Mix CDs” of her dad’s favorite songs and artists. John embraced the serenity of nature, enjoying boating, fishing, and camping with RVs or a camper trailer. A loving caretaker to many dogs throughout his life, he leaves behind his beloved faithful companions, Sadie Sue and Susie Q.

John was a compassionate and sensitive soul, often moved to tears by poignant scenes in TV and movies. He cherished staying connected with friends and family, and provided support during challenging times. John was upbeat and lots of fun to be around — he had tons of hilarious “dad-isms” and a silly nickname for just about everyone and everything.

Even during retirement and through his cancer journey, John continued to lend a helpful hand, work on cars, and tackle various home and artistic projects, demonstrating his enduring spirit and dedication to helping others. John touched many lives, to know him was to truly love him, and his absence will be profoundly felt.

John hoped that others would cherish memories of joyous times spent together. In honor of this wish, his family has assembled a photo album: https://bit.ly/remembering-jo…
