In loving memory of John Joseph Gustafson, whose gentle soul departed this world on December 14, 2023, in Clovis, CA, surrounded by the warmth of his cherished family. Born on December 8, 1954, in Red Bluff, CA, John's journey was one marked by faith, family, and unwavering devotion.
Growing up on Kerckhoff Avenue in the Huntington Boulevard area of Fresno, CA, he was rooted in a family that extended beyond bloodlines. John's story was one of resilience and unity as he was embraced by the love of his mother, Donna, and his stepfather, Herman “Gus” Gustafson, who lovingly adopted him and the younger children, weaving their lives into a tapestry of unbreakable kinship.
A proud graduate of San Joaquin Memorial in 1973, John answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Navy with honor and dedication. His time aboard the USS Oriskany from 1973 to 1977 as an Aviation Metal Smith Second Class marked not only his service but his commitment to something greater than himself.
For 45 years, John thrived in the contracting business, leaving a legacy of craftsmanship and diligence. Beyond his professional endeavors, he found solace and joy in restoring classic cars, pursuing the thrill of hunting, and most of all, in the embrace of his cherished family.
His passion for life was matched only by his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. John's heart beat in rhythm with his Christian beliefs, leading by example and touching countless lives with the grace and love he found in his faith. He shared the word of Jesus, guiding many to accept Him as their guiding light and savior, as exemplified in John 3:16-18.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Thursday, January 4th, at 10:30am at Bethany Church, located at 9161 N Maple Ave, Fresno, CA 93720, where John’s son, Joe, will officiate the service. The service will be followed by a moving military tribute at the Clovis Cemetery, located at 305 N. Villa, Clovis, CA 93612, honoring his service to the nation. A luncheon gathering to share memories and honor his legacy will follow at the Clovis Veterans Memorial Building, a testament to his dedication to his fellow veterans, located at 808 4th St, Clovis, CA 93612.
In his passing, John is reunited with his beloved mother, Donna Gustafson (O'Connor), as well as his fathers, Archie Nichols, and Herman “Gus” Gustafson, and brothers Dennis and Dan Nichols. He leaves behind a lasting legacy cherished by his devoted wife, Debbie; his children John Joseph II, Jordan Johnna, Joseph John, and daughter-in-law Ashley Marie; his siblings Susan Hogue, Chris Nichols, Mark Nichols, Annie Squire, Jo Hornbaker, Cecilia Nichols, Tim Gustafson, Therese Zepeda, and Matt Gustafson; and the cherished grandchildren, Emerson Kate, Noa Jolie, Shepard John, and Maverick John.
In every word spoken, in every life touched, John's spirit lives on—a beacon of love, faith, and unwavering dedication. He will forever remain a guiding light in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
