ברוך אתה יה אלוהינו מלך העולם, דיין האמת
Uncle John was one of my favorite uncles.
A man of integrity with a heart of gold. A sensitive soul with an aura of warmth, kindness and love that radiated from his face and was easily felt in his generous hug.
Amongst my favorite memories, which include meeting up for coffee at a diner in Clovis many moons ago, is the most recent one captured in this image above, which happens to be the last time I had the pleasure of seeing him in person.
Here we are, with my beautiful Aunt Debbie and dear cousin Joe, just months ago... Saying farewell one early spring afternoon as the sun was about to set in the Holy City of Jerusalem. At the time, I did not know it would be the last time, but it is a fitting final memory of a life that I had the great honor of having shared meaningful encounters with.
His trip to Israel was something that we had spoken about for years and I had the pleasure, in recent years, of helping him plan that trip by offering "local" insights and suggestions. A memory that I will always cherish was the day I spent, the last day of his Holy Land trip, giving a whirlwind guided "tour" of the Old City of Jerusalem, before escorting him and family back to the hotel, just in time to catch the shuttle for the return flight to the US.
I know that he really enjoyed the trip to Israel and that it was something that he had longed to do for some time. Intriguingly, it so happens that, here in Jerusalem, the hour he passed away was also the last day of Channuka, a holiday that celebrates how, in the hands of a righteous person, a single sacred candle can miraculously conquer the powers of darkness and bring God's transformative illumination to a world in need.
Uncle John was just such a person, a man devoted to the truth and to bringing restoration to souls in need of God's transformational love.
In Israel, the day he passed was not only the final day of Channuka, when the greatest number of candles are lit, but it also happened to be the Sabbath's Eve, the day that all work ceases and everyone prepares to enter the rest that God set aside for mankind to enjoy and feast in His Presence.
Nothing is coincidence in life and the steps of a righteous man are ordered of God. So, it's no surprise really that Uncle John completed his mission on Channuka's brightest day of illumination, which also was the day of transitioning into Sabbath rest.
Seems a clear message from Heaven saying, "Well done, son. Come on home."
As the old Irish proverb says: "May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back and may God hold you in the cup of His hand."
Godspeed to you Uncle John in your ongoing travels in that far country where you now find yourself.
And as the even more ancient Hebrew blessing says:
"May God bless you and guard you. May God shine His countenance upon you and be gracious to you. May God turn His countenance toward you and grant you peace."
With Great Affection, Your Nephew,
Joshua
