John Joseph Collins Sr. was born on August 5, 1942, in Somerville, Massachusetts, to John Sammon and Phyllis Anderson. At the age of eight, he moved to Arizona, where he was adopted and raised by John E. and Phyllis Collins alongside his brother and two sisters.
