John (Jack)'s obituary
John (“Jack”) Joseph McNamee III passed away peacefully in his home on May 12, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He lived a beautiful life as a husband and dedicated father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
Jack was born in Yonkers, New York on April 8, 1944 to the late John Joseph McNamee, Jr. and Helen Margaret Haworth. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne B. McNamee, and is survived by his loving wife Brett H. McNamee in addition to his two children, Patrick (Susan) McNamee and Leslie (Chris) Crabtree, and his six grandchildren, Cole, Tara, Nolan, Caroline, Sean and Drew. Jack was the oldest of the McNamee clan, leaving behind his sister Pat (Joe) Tempestra; and brothers, Kevin (Mary), Brian (Jill) and Sean (Mimi) McNamee and his many nieces and nephews, friends, former colleagues, and neighbors.
Jack was raised in upstate New York and attended St. Bonaventure University. He enlisted in and served proudly as a US Army Huey Pilot with two tours of duty in Vietnam where he earned numerous medals and awards. After his military service, Jack entered into a long, successful career in the hospitality industry, starting first with the Marriott Corporation restaurant division and then, most notably, as Director of Operations of The Tobacco Company Restaurant for 32 years. Jack was a respected and admired member of the Richmond restaurant industry and of the Richmond community.
Jack was an avid and accomplished athlete who enjoyed skiing, golfing, scuba diving and any other active outdoor sports. He was a big fan of the Buffalo Bills and especially the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. He was proud of his children and their accomplishments and was especially proud of his father’s ongoing legacy at St. Bonaventure and his service to the country during WWII. He was honored to be a mentor to his siblings, his children, his friends and to the many young people who worked for him during his career with the Tobacco Company.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of this giant of a man. Jack was loved and admired by endless friends, patrons, employees, neighbors and family members, all of whom he cherished for contributing to the happiness and memories of his long and blessed life.
Jack will have a private funeral service on the 4th of June at the Virginia War Memorial at 621 BelvidereStreet, followed a celebration of life for family and friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Old City Bar at 1548 East Main Street, Richmond.
