I can scarcely believe this guy has been gone for 2 years already.  And scarcely a day goes by that I don't miss him.  Every time something entertaining and nostalgic surfaces, I want to share it with him.  Every news article about ignoramus public figures behaving badly, I want to share snarky judgmental criticisms with him.  John, you are truly missed.
Thinking of John today, and the times we shared long ago (in a middle-school band previously noted).  Our world was a better place with him in it!   Sending sentiments of peace & love to the family.

I knew John for such a short time. I wished it would have been for life, but our short time together gave me so much.  I think we learned a lot from each other.  I still remember how John thanked me for “ teaching” him how to talk to the kitties, Kate and Samatha.  We will always have Paris.
Fun is not exactly the word I would use to describe playing music with John. He was a very intense drummer and always bang on time. He would underpin the movements and stops in the music and things like the movement out of the "rubato" section of a song, he always seemed to anticipate in a way that would give them a sense of inevitability. When John died I mulled over what to tell my brother, Tim who played guitar with us, about his death. Unfortunately he too died a couple of months later.

These two were the heart of our band, Off the Wall.

Aside from the kind of intuitive communication that takes place in music, John and I also shared a fascination with James Joyce. I have a distinct memory of a conversation I had with him when he walked in and found me poring over Ulysses on the dining room table. I told him I had tried to read it once before and was determined to get through it whether I could follow it all or not. He was interested in my determination and I like to think that it gave him the courage to read that very challenging book.

Just for fun, here is a poem I wrote after John invited me to see Roland Kirk at the UofM Armory:

Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Brown bear lumbers on stage: flutes, reeds,

horns hung round, slung round

swung round his neck.

Cool jazzmen jam with piano-jump, drum roll, bass-

fiddle bomp, tambour shakin, jukin the night.

Tonal vibrations blown through soprano and tenor,

both through one puffed mouth

jounce the hall—

Sweet horns blast a sound from brass into finger-

stopped cool um-uh-ummusic.

Tightnin rhythms work with plunkt high rills

over flute laid riffs

(Baby please let me climb up in your tree, Harmonia)

hummed in gentle melody, resonance

rolls on. Blues progress: one-man band troubadour

leavin town and tee-na-na on a blue laid bass of a

mojo history written in blue-blackness, blue indigo

blue of a midnight train

blowin full-tilt aborigine cheeks on a drone

swelled and blown long note bashin high hat

and gong crash din screams takes you up to the crescendo

of a razor flash— shakes through high-up

sweat-it-out, getting clean as a bell

ringing sound blown till flush flow just

tells through the clear story of a horn

like you never been born

of a whole life blown in the bag of a mind

into one blew note —

No sunshine,

no stars up in the sky,

no moon, no universe

just blacknuss.

I played in a middle-school band w/ John back in the late 60s/early 70s. He was a heckuva good musician even then, impressing w/ his mastery of every stroke of the drum solo in the Iron Butterfly tune "In a Gadda Da Vida," for instance. The photo (Dan Hovey, Jay Rogers, John & me) is from a "gig" our band - "Freedom" - had at the fellowship hall of University Methodist Church in College Park. I was saddened to learn of John's passing (via classmate Al Naylor). We had not spoken since our long ago school days. But it is clear from his obituary that he led a good & purposeful life, and that the world is worse off without him in it. My condolences to his friends & family.

Chris Brown
1969, Hamburg, Deutschland
After many years I got to see John again when he came to Hamburg to visit me and my woman. We meandered around town and he enjoyed himself in his fashion. Not long after that he invited us to meet him in Dublin for the Bloomsday celebrations.
The last time we met up was when we drove together down to the Outer Banks. On the way we listened to Bright Moments, a piece by Roland Kirk who I never would have seen if it hadn't been for John.

Celeste:  From the story of John's life I can see he had diverse interests, all of which focused on service to others and the beauty in the world. Even his inner struggles could not overcome these convictions. None of us knows what happens in death, but I like to think that what's important to us in this life remains important in the next. I think John is still serving others and reveling in all the beauty.

Celeste, I’m so moved by your obituary for Johnny.  Thank you for helping us know him better and appreciate him more.  Please accept my condolences on your loss.  He quietly went about his life doing good, making a difference to causes that touched his heart.  And we were not aware.  Personally, I’ll cherish the memory of the note he printed asking me to marry him at our Arkansas family reunion when he was six and I was 19,  and of his kindness spending the day hosting me on my visit to Annapolis.  I’m so pleased we had that time together.  Please accept my condolences on your loss.

My heart is heavy as I hear of John's passing.  My sincere condolences to the whole family.  John was a good friend growing up, we enjoyed so many activities and birthday parties for us kids on 36th Avenue.  I still keep in touch with many of our childhood/neighborhood friends Donna Zick, Mike West and Jimmy Dowdy.

Johnny met me in Washington, DC for the Women's Rally in January 2017 and we had a whole day of sharing our hopes and worries about the upcoming years.  I didn't know about his work in the Baltimore park.  I'd like to go there this spring. Cheers for Cousins!  Peter and I are sending our love, Celeste.
