John's obituary
On August 23, 2024 John Nicholas ( Nick) Greer, 93, of Bel Air, MD passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Lancaster, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife Della Greer; whom he shared nearly seventy cherished years. Nick lived a fulfilling life, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication.
Nick was survived by his two sons Jeff Greer (& his wife Addi & Grand kids Della Marie, Emily and Evan) and Jay Greer ( & his wife Lisa & Grand kids David and Christie), who brought him much joy and pride.
Nick was also a beloved Great grandfather & “POP POP” to five grandchildren. David & His wife Jessica’s 3 kids, Conner, Cora and Coen… and Christie & her husband Buddy’s 2 kids, Adam & Jacob.
Nick grew up with 6 brothers and 6 sisters and he managed to outlive all of them. Take a moment and imagine 12 brothers and sisters!
For Sisterly advice and direction there was Juanita, Kathleen, Eleanor, Wilma, Myrtle, & Ann.
To make life at Inwood even more interesting there were his brothers, Bus, Gene, Bill, Jack & Bob.
Early in his childhood, Nick contracted Polio and spent more than in year in a Baltimore hospital in traction and treatment where his Mother Ann would come every weekend bearing an angel food cake. Pictures of Nick recovering in his wheelchair at home show him undaunted by the challenge while his brothers and sisters whisked him around in his wheelchair. After recovery Nick went on to become a winning high school cross country runner.
But there was always his love of horses! As a young man he rode in numerous horse show riding mounts for noted trainers and owners. He and his horse crashed over and into fences several times while fox hunting in northern Harford county… Ahhh youth!
Nick really excelled at training horses, specifically racing thoroughbreds. He spent several years training race horses and traveling to race tracks all up and down the East coast. In the 60’s he went into the automobile business and went on to own several successful automotive dealerships in Pennsylvania. There seems to be some question as to what his favorite car was …it was either a 66 Chevy or a 64 black Lincoln Town Car with Red leather interior .
When not at work Nick could often be found on the golf course, where he honed his skills and got that handicap down !. Nick’s shared his easy laugh with his friends and had many wonderful moments on the Golf Course. Nick had a sweet tooth and was particularly fond of the classic chocolate with peanut butter. Next time you eat a Reese’s chocolate cup , maybe you’ll think of Nick.
To everyone who knew him he was a man who understood the value of laugher, family and friendships.
John Nicholas Greer's memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.
