John's obituary

John D. Geigley Jr., age 81, passed away peacefully at home in Venice, Florida on August 31, 2025, with his beloved wife by his side, following a long and courageous struggle with COPD.

John was born on May 15, 1944, in Fort Riley, Kansas, to John D. Geigley Sr. and Eleanor Aurora (Smith) Geigley. As a child, he traveled extensively before his family settled in Venice, Florida. He graduated from Venice High School with the Class of 1962.

Following graduation, John proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a submariner for 27 years, completing duty aboard six submarines before retiring from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. He took immense pride in his naval career and in the dedication and service it represented.

John settled down and raised his wonderful family of two daughters and two sons, several dogs and a few cats, in Rochester, New Hampshire at a house on Portland Street. When he’d finally had enough of winter, he moved back to Venice with his wife and made his condo his new castle.

John is survived by his wife of more than 46 years, Carol Anne Geigley; his four children, Jennifer Gornik and her husband Ross, Mark Geigley, Jason Geigley, and Sara Clifton and her husband Ricky; as well as his cherished grandchildren, Gabriella Clifton, Damian Clifton, and Ella Gornik, who were truly the apples of his eye. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

In life, John loved historical documentaries, collecting nutcrackers and beer steins, and sharing stories of his time as a submariner. He loved keeping a clean house and adored the time he got with his children and especially his grandchildren, all of whom he was immensely proud of. He wished he could have had more time with all of them.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Eleanor Geigley; his sisters, Johanna Mae Geigley and Carmem Downing. His first wife, Marcia Geigley; and his grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

John will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to family, his pride in service, and the quiet strength with which he faced life’s challenges. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
