Personal note from Rusel

In the tapestry of Johnny's life, the presence of Ulysses and James Joyce's works resonates deeply. Although I have struggled to navigate the intricate labyrinth of Ulysses and have yet to complete the novel, Johnny, in his boundless love for literature, has read it multiple times. Fate, introduced Johnny to a kindred spirit named Louis—a true "Joycean"—during his time in Prague. Together, Johnny and Louis embarked on endless conversations, delving into the realms of Joyce, Ulysses, life, and the pursuit of meaning.

To Johnny, Louis became more than a mere companion; he embodied the spirit of Joyce's literary universe, providing insight and shared passion. In their discussions, they would undoubtedly explore the parallels between Johnny's tumultuous, remarkable life and that of Stephen Dedalus—a character who captured Johnny's imagination and left an indelible mark on his being.

Please, Louis, forgive me if I misrepresent you or Joyce in my humble appraisal. It is an interpretation born of careful observation and deep affection. As I reflect upon Johnny's journey, I am reminded of the profound impact literature can have on our lives and the relationships it fosters.

Johnny's connection to Stephen Dedalus is not merely a superficial comparison. It transcends the boundaries of fiction and reality, intertwining their experiences with an ethereal thread of understanding. Like Stephen, Johnny embodies a spirit of rebellion, an insatiable thirst for meaning, and an unwavering determination to carve his own path through the labyrinth of existence.

Similarly, Johnny's story echoes Stephen's migration, a movement from one existence to another, mirroring the transition between Joyce's novels. Johnny, with unwavering conviction, would resolutely declare his understanding of "thusness," signifying his unwavering acceptance of his own existence. Though I had initially believed this sentiment to be from "Ulysses," further research revealed it to be a powerful quote from "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man": "If it is thus, I ask emphatically whence comes this thusness.”

This realization unlocks a profound understanding: existence is a perpetual motion, refusing to be confined by rigidity or preconceived notions. Ah, how my comprehension expands! At times, I would quip to Johnny about his resemblance to Dr. Jekyll, for his consumption of alcohol seemingly birthed a different persona, Mr. Hyde. Yet, with the clarity of hindsight, I comprehend that Johnny's quest was a response to the clamor of addiction, while his search for meaning, his pursuit of ‘thusness’, persisted unwaveringly.

Through the lens of Ulysses, Johnny's life unfolds as a modern-day odyssey, fraught with challenges, triumphs, and a relentless pursuit of self-discovery. His encounters, like the episodes in Joyce's masterpiece, are filled with complexity, ambiguity, and moments of profound illumination. And, much like Stephen Dedalus, Johnny traverses the landscape of his own psyche, grappling with his identity, searching for meaning, and striving to reconcile the disparate fragments of his being.

With fervor and conviction, Stephen Dedalus and Johnny beckon us to embrace the fluidity of life, to reject the confines of complacency, and to embark on our own odyssey of self-realization. Their stories inspire us to challenge the noise that surrounds us, to confront our own demons, and to embrace the eternal pursuit of meaning. In the end, it is our unwavering quest for ‘thusness’ that defines us and propels us forward on the tumultuous yet exhilarating journey of life.

In this loving appraisal, I pay tribute to Johnny's remarkable spirit and his deep affinity for Joyce and Ulysses. Through his connection to Louis and their passionate conversations, Johnny has woven himself into the fabric of Joyce's literary tapestry, becoming a living testament to the transformative power of art.

So, as I conclude my thoughts, I hold in my heart a profound appreciation for the intricate dance between life and literature, and for the way in which Johnny's journey mirrors that of Stephen Dedalus. May their stories forever inspire us to seek truth, embrace our own unique paths, and find solace in the shared bond of literary exploration.

Obituary

Kind, gentle, and intelligent, Johnny touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Whether he was walking down the street or riding the subway, his presence was always accompanied by the comforting melody of his headphones and the weight of a dense, literary book in his hands. His taste in literature, music, and film was as diverse and eclectic as the many facets of his beautiful soul.
