John was a really good guy who I had the pleasure of working with for several years at Verasonics. I've always been very impressed that he went back to earn his Ph.D. after working for many years, and we even overlapped a number of years at the Applied Physics Lab, though I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him back then. I always found him very easy to talk to and we had many nice conversations over the years. We lived close, in the Phinney - Green Lake area, and often talked about the neighborhood. He told a funny store once about going to a coffee shop off Aurora where they didn't seem to know how to make coffee. By the time he left with the awkwardly-made coffee he was convinced it was a front for an undercover police operation. Remembering how he told the story makes me laugh and I always think of him when I walk by that spot. I'm glad I had the opportunity to know and work with John.
Our prayers are surrounding you and our hearts are grieving with you for your loss of John, a good husband and father. We are here for you. We know John as the gentle giant married to zippy HongPhuc and dad to XuanMai, Emilee's classmate. Be gentle with yourselves.
Love to you all, Dean, Melissa & Emilee
Helping hands

In lieu of flowers

In lieu of flowers, consider a gift to Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.
My deepest condolences for your loss. I worked with John for the past few years at Verasonics and always appreciated our conversations. I always found what he said to be extremely bright, helpful, and insightful. Most of all, he was always friendly to me and I always walked away from our conversations having learned something important. He was one of a kind and will be missed.
