John's obituary

Mr. John Joseph Conley, of Antigo, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at his home of natural causes. He was 75 years old. He was born on December 17, 1943, in New York, NY a son of Dr. John and Mary (Bradwell) Conley.

John grew up in New York City where he graduated from Trinity High School. He distinguished himself by winning a Regent’s scholarship to Columbia University.

Growing up, John enjoyed summers in Westhampton Beach, NY. There he met Donna Smith, the granddaughter of Al Smith, the four-time governor of New York state. They married in December 1968 in a civil service in NYC. John and Donna had a son, Sam, in 1969.

John was drafted into the Army during the height of the Vietnam War. He was an expert shot who scored high on the Army’s aptitude test and qualified for a Military Occupational Specialty in Preventive Medicine. He was stationed at Fort Huachuca, AZ.

After completing his military service, John rode his two-stroke motorcycle across the country to return to New York City. In 1970, John moved to San Francisco followed by his wife and young son. In 1972, his wife was tragically killed in a bicycle accident. John proudly raised his son, Sam, as a single parent and never re-married.

In San Francisco, John worked as a house painter restoring and decorating beautiful Victorian homes. Outside of work he enjoyed playing the piano and composing music. He also enjoyed cooking, reading, train travel, watching movies and football. He never missed an opportunity to tell stories, entertain and make people laugh. He was by far the most witty, fun person in any room.

In 1998, John moved to Honolulu, HI where he drove a taxi. He moved to Antigo, WI in 2005 to retire.

Survivors include a son, Sam Conley and his wife June of Hoboken, New Jersey; two sisters, Mary Conley of New York, NY and Anna Conley of Los Angeles, California.

A remembrance ceremony with friends and family will be held in New York.
