John's obituary
John Rutledge Chapin died peacefully in home hospice in Summerville, South Carolina, on August 27, 2025. In testament to a deep bond, he was preceded in death by just one day by his wife of 40 years, Toni.
John was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, on May 20, 1939, and he spent his childhood there, with regular summer vacations to his beloved Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He earned recognition as a standout high school athlete in baseball, basketball, and football. He attended Colgate University. After a brief stint in the Marines, John worked for the SD Warren paper company, eventually settling in Annapolis, Maryland and raising a family. He started several construction companies as a general contractor, and he designed and built large and beautiful houses. He continued that work when he relocated to Seabrook Island, South Carolina in the mid 1990’s.
John carried a contemplative nature and spoke with purpose rather than frequency. He found fulfillment in creative pursuits, capturing the world around him through painting, drawing, and photography. He loved sports throughout his life, and golf provided him both challenge and relaxation on wide, green courses that he loved.
John leaves behind his sons Scott and John (Joel) and four grandchildren, Kendall (Simon), Tucker, Maddie, and Abby. He also had two stepchildren through Toni, Rebecca and Burr/James (Amy), as well as a grandson, Cole. John was preceded in death by his son Andrew and sister Andrea.
Those who knew John will remember his thoughtful presence, creative spirit, and the gentle way he moved through the world.
