John's obituary

John C. Austin, the noted humorist (aka Jay McRib, Derby D. Stylo, Tad Shwax), 36, of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 6, 2022.

A loving husband, son, and brother, John is celebrated by his wife Mercedes Austin-Mimran, parents Jill and Tony, sister Katie, brother Tommy, sister-in-law Jenni, and by an extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and hundreds of friends across the world.

A graduate of Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fl, in 2003, John earned a B.S. degree in Multinational Business from Florida State University in 2007.

Following a successful career with the Oakland Athletics baseball team for several years, John joined the San Francisco-based startup Best Reviews in 2018 as a Business Development Executive. A man of many talents, John was a gifted comedian, actor, voice actor, content creator and screenwriter. John is well known on social media as “Jay McRib” and famous for his satirical videos and memes.

John was a passionate, thoughtful friend and gift giver, always putting his wife “Sweets,” the “boys,” their dog Penny and his family above himself. Always in search of the next “bucket,” John was an incredible athlete, stand out basketball player and champion of the Clydesdale division of the Maine State Triathlon. A sports enthusiast, he was dedicated to following global soccer, baseball and American football in intense detail via Fantasy Sports and “Dongchasing.” He was a craft beer and health food expert, seasoned concert goer, lover of Japanese/Asian cultures and movie junkie. A pioneer of the “Glizzyfest,” an expert of the “ground score” and with an other-worldly sense of humor, John brightened the lives of hundreds with his comedy, wit, love, passion, optimism and incredible ability to connect with the people around him.

John passed doing what he loved and we have peace knowing that he is getting buckets in the sky with Kobe.
