I got an email today asking if there are things that happen in my day-to-day life that remind me of John. And yes, we think and speak of him often. But the first thing that immediately came to my mind is the Kingfisher. I have one that hangs out on my boat lift all the time now. We enjoyed talking about birds together and he told me about the belted and banded kingfishers. I would always see them in a specific spot near where I work, which he visited often, and I showed him where they were. I've always collected feathers and have this belief that when I come across one its a loved one sending a little message from heaven, and I hope one day to come across a kingfisher feather, because I know who it will be from.

I never formally met John. He was my Bible Study teacher's husband, and I got to know about him thru stories she would tell us about his interest in Wild Bird Photography. She showed me a photo of what she described as a rare bird, which was one I'd been seeing at my birdfeeder for quite a few years but hadn't made a positive ID on it till I saw his photo. It was a Painted Bunting. I am fortunate to live on some acreage in the Texas Hill Country that has a natural spring-fed creek by the house, and I learned from Debbie that this was the type of vegetation this seldom-seen bird loved. I have since ID'd the female, and really enjoy seeing them at the feeder almost all year. I have "taken" to calling them John & Debbie, when they visit. It is a sweet reminder of a very talented and loving man. He was truly a Renaissance Man!

There is far to much to share with all of the good times had. John and Debbie are like family to me. I was there before they tied the knot and there with each child born. I considered John a brother from another Mother, and Debbie has been far more than a Sister to me. I knew Debbie’s Parents Jim and Janice Scott and loved them as much as I do John and Debbie. I am heart broken, I realize it is my selfishness that causes the grief. But in reality I celebrate John’s life, his love of family, his dedication to his wife and children. John is indeed the lucky one, for he is in the presence of GOD and knows not trials or tribulations he knows all and all the Glory of our wonderful Creator. John knew who GOD is and I know he is loved more now than we can ever even understand. I Love Taylor, Trey and Cameron, I so Love Debbie….I Love you John, I shall miss you. We shall meet again, with Grace my friend.

John was my first cousin, an incredibly kind and thoughtful man. He was so very talented behind the lens and his photos of birds are so beautifully shot. It is a legacy that will live beyond him for the world to see. How lucky he was to have had the devotion of his wife and children. My brother Douglas who was about the same age and who sadly predeceased John, had enormous camaraderie and respect for John. The best home-made pizza. The longest chats on the porch. Flip flops and crazy boots colection (including the one made by ostrich's leather). 8 h trip from the coast and translating jokes back and forth all way long. Smelling the wine and chatting while making pierogi. Racing cars and birds pics. Offering me coffee every single morning and picking up my under age bro from police station... A lot of cool memories, very touching moments and a lot smile. That is John. In our hearts always "is", never "was".

I can't believe he is gone. We were already sad because we knew we wouldn't be seeing as much of him once he retired, but we were so happy and he was so happy about getting to spend more time with the grandkids. He was always so kind and wonderful with our kids. He was our mentor. He helped us grow up and gave us more advice than I can even recall....not just on work, but on life. His family was his world, it was always so apparent. We loved getting updates on every kid and grandkid as the years went by at each visit and he just beamed when talking about them. He had the kind of relationship with his kids that we aspire to. And he really enjoyed his work too, you could tell. I think he just liked making lots of friends everywhere he went and listening to audiobooks on the road. A one-of-a-kind, class act kindhearted gentle soul. We will miss you so much.
