John's obituary

John D. Bransford, PhD, age 78 passed away in his sleep on the morning of April 11, 2022 after a lengthy battle with Lewy Body Dementia. John was born to Paul and Ann Bransford on December 14, 1943.

As a researcher, professor, speaker and author, John dedicated his life to contributing to the world’s understanding of human learning. John was a Professor Emeritus of Learning Sciences and Psychology at the University of Washington in Seattle, the Founding Director of The Learning in Informal and Formal Environments (LIFE) Center, and a Centennial Professor and former director of the Learning Technology Center at Vanderbilt University. John is a member Emeritus of the National Academy of Education and the 2001 recipient of the E. L. Thorndike Career Achievement Award.

John’s family, friends and colleagues will all remember him as a man of compassion, intelligence, humor, and a tremendous collaborative spirit. He will be greatly missed.

John is survived by his wife Bunny, as well as his children Todd (Kay), Jason (Andrea), Ashley, and Camille (Brian); 4 grandchildren; and his brothers Chuck and Rick.
