John's obituary

John Michael Boyd, 64, of Dawes Street, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Baystate Medical Center. Born at the former Westover Airforce Base Hospital in Chicopee, on February 10, 1957, the son of Virginia L. Boyd, John remained a lifelong resident of Springfield, graduating in 1977 from the Roger L. Putnam Technical Academy where he was a basketball team member and team manager. At STCC John was a basketball Scorekeeper and team manager. Later he retired from Milton Bradley Co., and from Springfield Public Schools Transporation Dept. He also served as cameraman for Pioneer Valley High School Sports Show on Comcast 15; in addition, he assisted the Catholic Youth Organization youth basketball league. He will be remembered as the esteemed winner of a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am for successfully sinking a half-court basket at a UMass basketball game and for tirelessly promoting Multiple Sclerosis Awareness.

John was a kind and loving person willing to give anyone the shirt off his back. He will be forever missed by his sister Grace Boyd Walter; nieces and nephew Alicia Walter-Spencer (Kareem), Val-Marie Savage; Sean L. Walter, and innumerable friends. For those wishing to pay final respects, there will be a "walk-thru" wake at Harrell Funeral Home, this Thursday 5-7 p.m.
