John's obituary
Jack was born on September 26, 1933 in Esterville, Iowa to Inga Juhl and Harry Blackert and attended schools in Sioux Rapids, IA, graduating high school in 1951. He graduated from the Lamme School of Photography in Denver Colorado in 1952 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1953. John was married in 1953 to Retha Robbins in Linn Grove, Iowa and had two sons, John and James. Retha passed away in 1977. In 1984 he married Carol Ann Monahan in Rochester, New York.
The Air Force sent Jack to Parks Air Force base in California for boot camp and he graduated from radio and radar operations school at Kesslar Air Force base Biloxi, Mississippi in 1955. He served overseas in Sanderstrom Greenland on the North Atlantic dew line during the Korean War, where he developed his skill and love of table tennis, among other indoor sports. After an honorable discharge in 1957, as a Staff Sergeant, he enrolled in the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1961 and graduated in 1964 with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Photographic Science and Engineering degree. He took post graduate courses in photographic engineering and optical instrumentation at the University of California and went to work for Xerox corporation in Rochester. In 1969 he started Photographic Sciences Corporation in Rochester, NY selling his interest in 1988 and starting a new company, PSC Lamps. He sold PSC Lamps in 1992 and retired to Halfmoon, NY and Jupiter, Florida.
Jack was an avid horseman in the ’70s and ‘80s exhibiting at countless horse shows with his family, covering walls with awards and ribbons. He was also an accomplished photographer filling many albums with pictures of flowers, animals, landscapes, and many friends through his travels all over the world, including some photos found in magazines and other publications. Jack had a unique way of seeing the world and expressed his vision through his photographs that his family will always cherish. After his family, he found great joy in traveling all over in different motor homes to visit the wonderful sites in the US, Canada, as well as trips to Europe.
Jack is preceded in death by his first wife Retha and his son John. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Carol, of Jupiter, Florida and Halfmoon, New York. She was his best friend and tireless caregiver for the last part of his life. He is also survived by his son James and his wife Margaret of E. Bernard, TX and their children Katharine, Vickie, and Lissa. He is also survived by his step-children and their spouses, Philip and Kristen Monahan of Hamilton, MA, Erin and Michael Weisberg of E.
