John Martin Avery
November 7, 1955 – July 10, 2025
John Martin Avery passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 69. He was born in Guam to Harrison “Jack” and Beatrice Avery and later moved with his family to Walla Walla, Washington, following his father's retirement from military service. John graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1974 before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy from 1974 to 1979.
John married Diane Jacky, and together they raised three beloved children. He and his family lived in Pullman, WA where John earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Education and Economics from Washington State University. During this time he continued his military service as an officer in the Washington State Army National Guard, retiring at the rank of Major in 1998.
The family returned to Walla Walla, where John began his career as a dedicated educator at Liberty Christian, Prescott High School, and Walla Walla Public Schools. He was deeply involved in the community, volunteering as a football coach, softball coach, and actively participating in the Elks Lodge, where he served as Exalted Ruler.
Later in life, John transitioned into a career as a mental health counselor at the Washington State Penitentiary, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping others. He spent his final 15 years in Pensacola, Florida, with his second wife, Ellen, where he enjoyed fishing, the companionship of his loyal Corgis, Gabby and Niles, and time spent with family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Harrison “Jack” and Beatrice Avery, his sister Joan Hart, and his wife Ellen Avery. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Jennifer Churchill (John), Brooke Gates (Schad), and Jonathan Avery; stepson Bobby Brooks; his grandchildren, Layla Avery, Connor Churchill, Cara Gates, Samantha Avery, Broderick Churchill, and Jackson Avery; his brothers, Michael and Jeff Avery; his niece and nephews, Erin Avery, Gerry Pemberton, and Kyle Avery; and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on August 4, 2025, at Olive Baptist Church, 1836 E. Olive Rd., Pensacola, FL, with a reception to follow. A celebration of John’s life will also be held in Walla Walla, WA, at a later date.
John will be remembered for his kindness, his service to others, and the love he shared with all who knew him.
