John's obituary
John Arthur Anderson passed from earth into eternity on November 1, 2022, at the age of 95. He was born August 13, 1927, on a farm that his grandparents homesteaded in rural southeastern Washington State near Diamond, a small town on the outskirts of Colfax. It was a miracle that both he and his mother survived his difficult home birth, but with his first breath began a beating heart that served him well even after suffering four heart attacks. The second of four children, he grew up doing farm chores and learning responsibility. He completed high school then was drafted into the Army where he served in Korea and Japan between WWII and the Korean War. During that time, he discovered a love of languages and would often use Japanese phrases that he had picked up while in the east.
Shortly after returning from his military service, he was pursued by his Savior, Jesus Christ, and began to serve the Lord. This decision caused him to want to learn more about his great God, so he hitchhiked across the country to attend Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis, MN. It was there that he met the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Harris, who later became his wife of 50 years. Following their years at Northwestern, they headed north into Canada to attend Sharon Bible School where they were introduced to the ministry of Ernest Hawtin whom they looked to for spiritual leadership for many years.
John and Dorothy were married in 1951 and blessed with a large family - five sons, and one daughter. The family lived in Washington State in the early days then moved to California in the late 1950s, drawn by the desire to follow the Apostolic ministry of Ernest Hawtin, who had established East Oakland Assembly several years before. They continued to live in the Oakland area with the exception of 4 1/2 years when they returned to Washington in the mid-1970s due to a recession and shortage of construction work in California.
John could do a wide variety of things and had several occupations. He began as a farmer then worked as a welder, roofer, carpenter, carpet cleaner, direct sales, plus more. He would do anything to provide for his family and enjoyed being self-employed so formed various companies. He had a creative and inventive mind and loved to work with his hands, tinkering at his workbench where he seemed able to repair anything! His reputation as a handyman wherever he lived kept him busy! He loved the outdoors - camping, hiking, hunting, and stargazing....... he was always up for an adventure of any kind. He chose to go hang gliding for his 80th birthday and loved every second of the experience! He enjoyed teasing and had an easy laugh. His positivity was a wonder to his wife. Believing together, their faith in God to work things out, never failed them.
While being an active, strong, and healthy man, John faced many serious medical conditions, but his faith in God as his Healer brought him through them all. He was healed of Meniere's Disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and melanomas in his right eye and eyelid, neck and chest that were removed but didn't take his eye or metastasize, large arterial aneurysms in his legs that caused severe circulation issues and pain in his feet to the point that amputation was considered seriously but he kept his feet until the end, congestive heart failure, and other skin cancers. John began living with Steve and Carol in 2013 and was able to walk up and down the stairs to his room until the last 6 weeks of his life. He entered hospice care in February of 2022 and enjoyed foot massages given by our angel from Tonga, Afa Lomu, a caregiver who gave Carol a break. Those loving massages brought life back into those feet!
Never ashamed of his faith in God, John wanted to share the good news that “Jesus Lives!” with everyone. His kindness towards his fellowman was constant and he was a light wherever he went, noticing when someone needed a friend or a helping hand and was quick to offer his services in any way. His work ethic was a role model for his children and anyone who got to know him. He faithfully attended East Oakland Assembly until the Lord called him home.
The Lord granted John a full and long life. He outlived all other members of his family and will always be remembered as a man of great faith whose works followed him by the many notable and incurable things from which he was healed. John was greatly loved, and his memory will continue to inspire our faith; we shall miss him and look forward to our reunion some sweet day.
