John's obituary

John Ross Allen was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on Tuesday, May 21st, 2019. His final weeks were spent peacefully at his home in Houston, Texas surrounded by family and friends.

John was born on January 13, 1953 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Cooper Stedman and Willa Faye Allen. Growing up as the second oldest of four boys, the house was never quiet. John and his brothers were regulars on the baseball field and could always be counted upon for a game of pick-up. He cherished the summer vacations to Calvert, Texas where he loved to swim, play golf and tennis. After Ponca City, the family also spent time in Houston and Fort Worth before settling in Sulphur, Louisiana. After graduating from Sulphur High School, John attended Texas A&M. College years were enjoyed with friends watching the family’s beloved Aggie football games. He graduated with Degrees in Building Construction and Business Management. Following graduation, he moved to Houston, Texas where he founded Metro Parcel Delivery and spent the next 25 years in the delivery business.

As his own three sons arrived, John’s athleticism was quickly relied upon. Countless seasons of Little League were coached by John. Many nights he could be found at the Oaks Dads Club fields helping players to perfect their pitch or take a stronger lead off first. His commitment to his sons was evident to everyone – family, friends, and community members.

Throughout his life, John loved to run. He treasured spending time training for marathons with the vibrant Houston running community and developed amazing friendships through the sport. Whether it was running up parking garages, waking up super early to “beat the heat”, or just meeting at the zero marker for a prayer before the loop, he embraced this group completely and was always on the lookout for his next race adventure.

John also found a home at Spring Branch Community Church, which later became Bridge Point. Leading small groups and bible studies, listening and learning, he cherished the opportunity to faithfully worship the Lord with a body of believers. If he had one more day, he always said he would use it to share the good news.

Some of the biggest recipients of John’s selfless heart were his grandchildren. Hours upon hours have been spent reading on the couch, exploring new countries and learning about their cultures, singing the same song 100s of times, laughing until it hurts, telling stories or just finding the perfect Bible verse before bed. As the cancer became a stronger presence, John’s patience with his grandchildren was ever present; he would often time calmly explain each new bruise on his arm or why he had so many “ouchies”.

John is survived by his three sons: Christopher and his wife Kimberly (San Rafael, CA), Justin and his wife Hannah (Naples, IT), and Benjamin (Portland, OR); nine grandchildren: Ashley, Emma, Elijah, Cooper, Eden, Samuel, Esli, Presley, and Nicolas; and two brothers, Trent Allen and Neil Allen. John was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Allen.

A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 11:00am at Bridge Point Bible Church in Houston, Texas (13277 Katy Freeway) with a reception to immediately follow.
