John's obituary
John Charles Allan, 62, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, just a few days shy of his 63rd birthday, at Angel Medical Center in Franklin, North Carolina, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Born on October 31, 1962, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Doris and Leslie Allan, John spent most of his life in Vermont, where he built not only homes but a life full of love, laughter, and stories worth retelling, before moving to North Carolina 11 years ago.
A carpenter for most of his life and a logger for many years, John took pride in hard work and honest craftsmanship. His hands shaped wood, but his heart shaped the lives of those lucky enough to know him.
John found joy in the outdoors—hunting (deer and ginseng), hiking, and fishing whenever he could. He loved tending to his garden, enjoying a good concert, and sipping a glass of scotch at the end of the day. He was strong and brave, with a quick wit and a laugh that could fill a room. Above all, John was loving—a father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend whose presence made the world a little warmer.
He is survived by his daughters, Meagan and Amy; his granddaughter, Lalin; his sister, Priscilla, and her husband, Mark; his brother, Thomas; along with many cousins and nieces and nephews who all adored their Uncle John.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Doris; his father, Leslie; his brothers, George and Michael; and his sister, Diane.
John had many tattoos that had very special meanings, but one sticks out the most. Lyrics of The Avett Brothers that read “if I live the life I’m given, I won’t be scared to die” are words that he lived by until he expressed that he was ready to meet Jesus.
John’s spirit lives on in the mountains and forests he loved, in the laughter of his family, and in the countless memories he leaves behind.
