Andrea Kübler
2003, Messina, Sicily, Italy
In 2003 I visited Allan at his home in Messina after I had met him briefly at the University of Tübingen where I worked as a Postdoc. After lunch Allan invited me to sit with him on the balcony. I remember this scene as if it were yesterday: blue sky, warm sun, and a view across the bay of Messina – in fact, too nice to be true – and Allan sitting on my right hand side. In this wonderful Mediterranean atmosphere he asked me: “What interests you about science and about sleep”? I was stunned! Allan was the first person ever who asked me about my scientific interests. This came so as a surprise to me that it took a while for me to answer. There I was, sitting on a balcony in Messina with Allan Hobson and he caring about my interests. Ever since that time we stayed in contact and I had the honour to spend many times with him in Sicily at his home in the countryside and at his farm in Vermont. I learned a lot from him about the mechanism of sleep regulation, dreaming, and how to lead a scientific discussion on solid arguments. Ever lasting memories.
Allan Hobson was my friend and mentor. I first contacted him in 1992, after reading his book The Dreaming Brain, and shared with him my wife Janice's and my experiences and experiments with lucid dreaming. He encouraged us to write our book on lucid dreaming, which we self-published in 2000. I also visited him at his farm in Vermont on a number of occasions starting in 2008, and we created a website for his Dreamstage Museum. He even visited us at our home in the Philadelphia area one year. He was a remarkably insightful character, and we will miss him.
For the past 35 years, I came to the farm each winter with a collection of friends and family. We treasured our time there. Over the years, my friendship with Allan developed through emails, cards, and in person when our visits overlapped. Most of our conversations centered on the farm and all the renovations that he made over the years. He was so proud of his work there. I feel honored to have known him and spent time in the home that he loved so dearly. My sincere condolences to all the family. Richard Allsbrook
