Joey's obituary

Joey De'Wayne "Bam" Garner passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 5, 2025, in San Francisco, California, at the age of 31. Born on January 10, 1994, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Joey was the beloved son of Jennifer Garner and Billy Joe Stanfield.

Joey’s life was shaped by both Mississippi roots and California experiences. He spent much of his childhood in Vallejo, California, where he was lovingly raised by his late grandmother, Betty Jean Smith. Known affectionately as a “granny’s baby,” Joey shared a deep bond with her that left an enduring imprint on his heart.

Throughout his youth, Joey often traveled alongside his father, who worked as a truck driver. Those journeys across the country became treasured memories—moments of connection and discovery that helped shape his view of the world. Whether on the road or at home, Joey carried with him a tender heart and a giving spirit.

He faced life’s challenges with quiet strength and resilience. His kindness revealed itself in countless ways—especially in how he looked out for others who were struggling.

Joey is survived by his parents, Jennifer Garner and Billy Joe Stanfield; his sister, Ahlia Garner; and host of aunts, uncles, cousins along with many others whose lives were touched by his presence. He is preceded in death by his cherished grandmother, Betty Jean Smith of California; grandfather, Emmitt Shaw of Mississippi; and uncle Keith Shaw of North Carolina.

Though Joey’s journey was not without hardship, it is remembered most for the love he gave freely and the lessons he taught about compassion, forgiveness, and unbreakable family bonds.

The family finds comfort in Scripture during this time of mourning:

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” – Psalm 147:3

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4

Services to honor Joey’s life will be held in both California and Mississippi. Details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Joey’s memory are invited to consider donations to organizations supporting the homeless community in San Francisco, such as the Mayor’s Fund for the Homeless or the Welcome Home Project.

May Joey's memory bring peace to all who knew him.
