HI Andre Nadine &Cole, we are truly sorry for your loss, may the Lord bless you and keep you safe .Words fail me so I am sending our love during this difficult time.
Lots of love
With a heavy, heavy heart, and crying eyes I say RIP to my best friend Jode Deklerk. You were a son, a brother, a teammate, a mentor, and an amazing friend. You meant so much to so many people. You have been with me through every chapter of my life from 2nd grade till now and it pains me so much to know you are gone. I wouldn’t be half the person I am today if it wasn’t for you buddy. Your family treated me as one of their own - helped me with homework, healed me when I was hurt, and taught me the beautiful game of Rugby. If only I knew that Seahawks game we just went to was the last time I’d see you... but it brings me a little bit of light knowing how much fun we had that day.

This world can be a cruel and unfair place...and this is the most heart tugging example of that. Jode was the strongest, funniest, most competitive dude I knew, and loved everyone in his life. No matter what was going on you wanted him on your side.. I KNOW he would want us all to be strong for him. So that’s what we need to do.

I hope this loss can bring us all closer together. Cherish and love the people in your life. Reach out to people you haven’t talked to in a while and let them know you are thinking of them. It’s what he would want.

27 is too young to go King.. but you did more in those years than most would in a lifetime.

My thoughts and prayers to all affected by this.

Andre, Nadine, Cole, and Taylor. You were his world. I send you all the love I have.

This life we live is temporary..

Until we meet again brother.

Celebrating together. It was …

Celebrating together. It was entirely his idea to have this little party for me. He went out of his way to buy and cook dinner for all of his friends. Jodel’s silly soul touched the lives of so many people. No words can describe my pain for the de Klerk family, my brother, and everyone’s lives that he shined a light into. He will never leave my heart.
In the sixth grade I started school at Maple Grove. It was a new school for me and I was never very good at making friends, I was always too shy, quiet, and awkward. I think Josh Marshall was my only friend in that whole school at that point. Well one day in P.E. we are running the mile and Jode just starts running the mile with me. For no good reason he approached me and decided to include me and for a kid who wasn't very confident it felt really good. He had a real knack in making people feel good about themselves. At some point after that he invited me over to his house to play video games and the rest is history. I loved the guy ever since.
Even though we're the same age he has always felt more like a big brother. I think from the moment I met him I looked up to him. I mean who else could wear shorts and sandals to school everyday and still be that cool! I admired the way people were just drawn to him, how easily he could make people laugh, and just how generally great it was to be around him.
No matter what we were doing if Jode was there it was going to be fun. Just the other day he was at my house trying to help me mount the TV to my wall and his bright idea was that if we hammer a nail into the wall every inch eventually we will hit a stud. Well after eight holes and NO stud I had to remove the hammer from his hands and him being the punk that he was kept trying to sneak over and hammer another nail. He thought it was so funny and truth be told it really was. At the end of the day my TV is standing on the ground and there are ten holes in my wall and I love those holes.
I just moved back to the area and was really excited to start spending more time with him it's been a while since we've lived close to each other. But now I can't do that and it really sucks. I'm gonna miss him. Love you buddy.

I met Jode during his freshman year of college at Arizona State. We immediately became brothers on and off the rugby pitch. Even though we had only just met, it felt like we had been reunited after many years apart. He played rugby with tenacity and grit, but he had a soft side as well. I will always remember his smile and laugh. He was generous and loyal. I will always carry him in my heart. Rest in peace my friend.
