Joanne's obituary

Joanne Virginia (Pohlsander) Nelson passed away peacefully in her sleep into the arms of our loving Heavenly Father on Monday, December 13th, 2021, at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our beloved and valiant Joanne was a wonderful wife, daughter, mother, sister and friend who deeply touched the lives of those around her. Joanne dedicated her life to service by always helping her friends, family and neighbors. She always had a smile on her face for everyone she met.

Joanne Virginia Pohlsander was born on June 5, 1963, in Elko, Nevada, to John and Susan (Sanders) Pohlsander, later divorced. Her Father remarried Shirley Mae Scoresby. Joanne attended Wells Elementary for the early years of schooling in Nevada. The Pohlsander family relocated to Bluebell Utah, where Joanne continued her schooling in Altamont, Utah. She participated in several school activities including home economics, choir and 4H, where she competed and showed livestock animals, winning many awards. Joanne graduated from Altamont High School in 1981 and successfully completed Seminary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joanne continued on with her education by attending Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. She then went on to Salt Lake Community College to earn her degree in nursing

While attending school at Snow College, she met Garen Koeven. They married in 1983, later divorced. During their marriage they welcomed four boys into the world; Bradley, Derek, Jesse and Wade.

Several years later Joanne met Daniel Roy Nelson at Fernwood Park in Layton, Utah, in the fall of 1996 and began dating. They were married on November 15 1997, at the Utah State Capitol. Joanne loved being a LPN and aided in the caring and healing of others. During her time in Utah, Joanne cared for patients at Primary Children's and University of Utah hospitals.

The family then moved to Stockton, Missouri, in 2001. Together, Dan and Joanne bought and ran a successful farming and CSA business with Danjo Farms with Joanne still working as an LPN at Boone County Hospital. Due to a work injury, she was forced to retire from nursing but was able to become a successful baker at the farm. With her own Rise and Shine Bakery, Joanne was able to share her passion for baking and baked several varieties of breads, rolls and other desserts. During their time in Missouri, Dan and Joanne and were able to be sealed in the Nauvoo, Illinois, Temple for time and all eternity.

Joanne continued her service by holding several callings at church such serving in the Relief Society and Primary presidencies, most recently serving as a Primary teacher. Joanne also enjoyed sharing her talents for decorating, arts and crafts, quilting and baking with those around her. Most recently she enjoyed working with the youth as a substitute teacher and para educator as well as dressing up as Mrs. Claus and spreading the holiday magic with her beloved Santa Claus Dan. Joanne loved her family and her grandchildren and made every effort to maintain relationships and make lasting memories.

Joanne and Dan moved back to Salt Lake City, Utah, in the fall of 2020. Joanne loved the mountains, streams and pine trees. Her heart soared and was healed by their strength and beauty. Many miles up the canyons, to rushing falls and cascading mountain peaks, Joanne found peace. She was moved and touched by God's creations and now soars like an eagle with healing in her wings.
