Ria Deneut. In Ps. 23 God promesses us to never abandone us when dark moments arrive. We experience His comfort, love and strenght through His Spirit and Word and through people He is sending us. In His name, they bring light and encourament. Twenty years ago, Joanne came like a lightbearer and a friend into my life when my futur had become uncertain because of illness. And ever since, I’ve been appreciating her hospitality, her listening ear, friendhip and her laughter. So terrible sad she is gone!

Joanne was a special woman to those who had the joy of knowing her. Many of our global partners recall being blessed by the opportunity to meet her during one of her international trips with Cal, as they represented CBM. Thank you, Joanne, for your faithful service to God and your love for the vulnerable in our world.

Doug and I first met Joanne in 1974 when we began our adventure as youth pastors at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Ky, and studies at SBTS. We took Cal under our wing and brought him to the church where he met Joanne. They were smitten! Doug and I sang at their wedding and we all began our ministries in Canada at the same time, in the late '70s. Cal and Joanne have been part of the fabric of our lives for a long time. Though we have lived in different parts of the country, it's always been a treat to exchange news of our families at Christmas. It is a shock to hear this news, and we grieve her passing far too soon by our human standards. Thank you, Jesus, for providing such life and hope at these sad times. Cal and family, we love you and support you from a distance in love and prayer.

Dear Cal and Family:
Joanne was 'precious' to us and to so many. We are a people who go from life to life but still, may God be your present companion during this painful transition. He IS Emmanuel,

Dear Cal and All the Malena Family,
My heart goes out to all of you at this time of great grief and sadness over Joanne's sudden passing. Joanne's friendship, particularly during my late 20's and 30's, played a significant role in my life and has had a lasting impact on me. Joanne was there as a support and encourager as I was seeking to grow in my faith. She was a help and a role model for me as a young mother. There are so many adjectives I could use to describe Joanne, but one that comes most to mind is "authentic". Joanne was Joanne, wherever she was and whoever she was with. Her gentleness, listening ear, compassion, and easy manner made her a joy to be with. May God hold you close and give you strength and grace for each day and may the love of others help you as you move forward.
Much love,
Pat Savage

I remember meeting Joanne in Louisville all those years ago. I thought then that her surname fit her character --- "Precious", and I wasn't wrong. My sincere condolences on your great loss. May the peace of Christ be yours.
