Joan's obituary

Margaret Joan Hudson Brown
October 2, 1936 – December 5, 2019

Joan Brown passed peacefully from this world and into the arms of Christ on December 5, 2019 at the age of 83. She was born October 2, 1936 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Oscar and Hazel (Stockstill) Hudson. Joan was a debutant in Corpus Christi, TX and a Tri Delta at The University of Texas at Austin where she graduated with a degree in Education. She moved to Houston, took the civil servants exam and commenced working at the Social Security Administration. Shortly thereafter she met the love of her life, Jerry Brown and after a three-week courtship they were engaged, married three months later, and were blessed with 59 years of marriage. During the first year of marriage, Joan retired to care for the first of her three children. While raising her family in Houston, Joan taught sewing and sold Avon, came to experience a personal relationship with Christ, and helped a good friend establish perpetual adoration chapels throughout Texas. She then moved to Lakeway, TX and spent time during the last twenty years helping establish perpetual adoration at Emmaus Catholic Parish, becoming a Spiritual Director, and consecrating herself to the secular Order of the Discalced Carmelites of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel founded by St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross where she took the name “Joan of the Eucharist”. She died to herself, (over coming her fear of public speaking, and sacrificed considerable private prayer and contemplation time) in order to show God's love in our everyday lives, wherever God lead her and with the people God gave her. She was known for her intercessory prayers and bringing the love of Christ to so many. Joan succumbed to her melanoma cancer, which she battled for twenty years. Throughout her many medical crosses (in addition to melanoma, she endured lung and breast cancers and Parkinson’s) she united all her sufferings to Christ. Joan is survived by her husband, Jerry R. Brown, her children: Kathy and son-in-law Marc Ward; Linda and son-in-law Darrell Ballard; and Scott and daughter-in-law Ana Brown; as well as her eight grandchildren: Nicole Ballard, Taylor Ballard Womac, Joshua Ballard, Hunter Ward, Evan Ward, Caden Brown, Sofia Brown and Kayla Brown; two great grandsons: Weston and Jack Womac; additional nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Poncho. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Oscar “Don” Hudson, Jr.; her grandson Eric Ballard; and many cherished pets including Sam. She lived a consecrated life to our Lord, Jesus Christ and his mother, Mary. Christ lived in her and she brought him to so many people. Her family and the community will miss her deeply. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at Emmaus Catholic Church Lakeway, TX at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to thank Alicia Ramirez, Heart to Heart Hospice, and the additional caregivers God sent during her last weeks, all of whom took such beautiful care of her (and Jerry). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Charities, 1817 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78702, (512) 651-6080.
