When I think of Joan, the first word that comes to my mind is laughter, and not just a quiet laughter but loud and contagious. I just rewatched a video of her telling stories and doubling over laughing at her own stories. Not only that, everyone was laughing at her laughing – it was contagious. Joan loved life and savored every moment. She loved parties, no wait, she was THE PARTY. There was never a dull moment with her around. She loved people and everyone that knew her knew how much she cared about them. She was an excellent listener and had incredible insight and advice.
Joan loved Jesus and she never hesitated to share her faith. It was just that simple. To know Joan was to know Jesus.
Joan’s talents were unlimited: Decorator extraordinaire, seamstress, knitter, collector, excellent cook and housekeeper, party planner, sales person, counselor, organizer, leader, and tour guide of her beloved Maine and New England.
Joan was funny, kind, sympathetic, faithful, loyal, devoted, generous, unselfish, caring and protective.
Joan loved her family and was so proud of them. When she and Ralph would come to visit, she would ask Ralph to tell us grandchildren stories and they would each laugh hysterically as if telling it for the first time. They were so proud of each of their children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the deep and close bond she had with Allison. You were her world. She talked about you with complete love and adoration. It’s a mother-daughter thing.
Joan and I became friends almost 50 years ago. Even though we were separated by many miles most of that time, when we would see each other, we would pick back up as if there was no span of time. She was there for me through the good times and the bad times and I for her. I think I brought calmness to her and she brought fun to me.
I wish so much I could be there to celebrate her life because I know she is celebrating. I’m sure it would help me be able to say goodbye, but for now I will still think of her in her beloved York in her dream come true home. I love you Joan now and forever, and whenever this conservative girl is daring enough to wear something colorful and bold, I will think about your influence in my life.
It won’t be long and we’ll all be together for eternity.
