Jimmie's obituary

Jimmie Swanson, 74 of Fairburn, GA died on October 7,2020 from a long-term illness at Piedmont Fayette Hospital in which he battled to the very end with courage and quiet dignity. He was born December 29, 1945 to Deacon Eddie Swanson and Estella Jones Swanson in Macon County, Alabama. In 1973 he married and of this union four children were born.
From an incredibly early age Jimmie showed a high aptitude for automation and mechanics. He went to technical school and earned six certifications in disciplines such as: Auto Mechanics, Upholstery, Auto Detailing, and Truck Driving.
Jimmie was extremely passionate about anything with wheels and there was no type of vehicle he could not drive or fix. He would drive everything; from motorcycles to vans to 18 wheelers and at one point fancied himself a race car driver. Not only did he enjoy fixing cars, he also was an avid car dealer - making and trading custom built cars and car parts. Jimmie was truly a car connoisseur, a self-proclaimed bonafide Chevy man but interestingly his dream car was an apple red convertible Porsche. During Jimmie’s career he worked as a mechanic for The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management and as a long-haul tractor trailer driver taking routes that crisscrossed all over the United States. He was exceptionally proud of his craft as a mechanic and car shop owner, which he nurtured and grew over a 30-year period.
Jimmie spent his leisure time playing the guitar, singing, listening to his favorite BB King tracks, and dancing. Most mornings he started the day sitting at the breakfast table enjoying coffee and table talk with a group of friends. He lived his life a quarter mile at a time and will be remembered for always pulling over to help anyone with car trouble.
Jimmie was a long-time member of Sweet Pilgrim Baptist Church, Alabama and in recent years attended Sunday morning services at Fairburn Healthcare Center, Georgia where he resided. He leaves behind to cherish his memory: six children including four from his previous marriage, a host of grand-children, great-grand-children, two brothers, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his eldest son, his eldest brother, and two sisters.

The family would like to thank all the Fairburn Health Care Center's health care professionals who comforted and cared for Jimmie in his last days. Special thanks to Reginald, Jimmie's room-mate, friend, and guardian angel.

A private memorial service will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Decatur, Georgia.
