Our dad was passionate about education. He was the only one in a family of 7 to graduate from middle school. He had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, especially where numbers were concerned. Against all odds, he achieved his dream of a doctorate in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University, where he immersed himself in the study of Number Theory. He was 51 years old.

After graduation, he found a home at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN, where he discovered his love for teaching. He was instrumental in building the Computer Science department and spent the remainder of his career here. Dad was passionate about the education system in America and felt deeply connected to his work at APSU. He was so proud of his department and his students.

We’ve established a scholarship at APSU to honor his memory. The Dr. Jim Vandergriff Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students at APSU seeking Computer Science degrees.
