Jewell Gloria Scott was born on February 12, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, Cook County Hospital. She was the third of six children of Thomas and Adell Scott. She attended Hyde Park High School where she excelled in the school's band playing "first flute." She accepted Christ at an early age at the Ebenezer Baptist Church on Chicago's South Side.
