Jewell Gloria Scott was born on February 12, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, Cook County Hospital.  She was the third of six children of Thomas and Adell Scott. She attended Hyde Park High School where she excelled in the school's band playing "first flute." She accepted Christ at an early age at the Ebenezer Baptist Church on Chicago's South Side.  It was at an interdenominational youth conference with the church that she met and began dating Edward Barrie Jr.  In 1962 the two were married and bore their first child together, Edward Barrie III.  This would be Jewell's first and only marriage.  From this union Robert and later Lester would be born before their eventual divorce.  Jewell would later give birth to her only daughter Denise and later Dennis.  It was in this next season of her life that Jewell began a 35-year career as a Data Entry and Key Punch Operator.  In 1973 Jewell would purchase her own home in the South Chicago community of Roseland where she lived until 1980.  In 1980 Jewell moved to Long Beach, California where she continued to raise her five children to adulthood.  Although Jewell was known by all who knew her to be  "strong willed," she also possessed a contagious smile and an entertaining sense of humor.  She enjoyed comedy, live bands, shopping, cooking, and traveling.  Her favorite artists included Aretha Franklin, Barry White, and Gladys Knight.  She honed her father's cooking skills and cooked the best of everything from scratch.  Her specialties were banana pudding and chocolate cake all from scratch.  In her own way Jewell was a caring, and passionate daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  Jewell was preceded in death by both her parents, ex-husband Edward Barrie Jr.,  and her first son Edward Barrie III.  She leaves behind to cherish her memories, four children:  Robert Todd Barrie (Angela), Lester Eugene Barrie (Trinette), Denise Gwendolyn Smith, and Dennis Gordon Barrie; two sisters, Clotelia Riddell, and Delores Lutcher; two brothers Ronald and Donald Scott; grandchildren:  Jordan Isaiah, Niles Thomas, and her name's sake Karis Jewell, many other relatives, and dear friends.
