Farewell, Jessica.

Jessica was a strong, compassionate, and endlessly giving woman. She lived to serve humanity, and that was her true purpose one that knew no boundaries of race, color, or nationality. She gave without limits and loved without conditions.

She has left us now, and with her departure, humanity has truly lost a remarkable soul.

I had the honor of working with her, and the even greater honor of having her as the Co-supervisor of my PhD dissertation. I was the last student upon whom she placed the doctoral hood. She placed it on me while she lay on her deathbed, apologizing gently for not being able to attend my graduation ceremony. She told me that illness had exhausted her and that she would soon leave this world.

She asked me to come closer. I embraced her, tears filling my eyes. I told her, “We did it, Dr. Jessica. She said you deserve this Barka.” She smiled and said she was happy happy that I was now a doctor.

In that moment, I witnessed not only the greatness of a scholar, but the beauty of a human being whose kindness transcended life itself.

Indeed, humanity has lost an extraordinary woman.

I offer my deepest condolences to myself, to science, and to all who had the privilege of knowing Jessica. My heartfelt sympathy goes to her family and loved ones. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched, the minds she shaped, and the love she gave so freely.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Jessica will be greatly missed.  A life well lived with a lot of love given.  A kind soul with a great sense of humor.  A dedicated teacher and servant to the community.  Thank you, Jessica.
My journey with Prof. Jessica…
My journey with Prof. Jessica Davis began in the summer of 2022 when I was searching for an internship. Although there were limited opportunities, I was recommended to her because of my background in agricultural economics and extension. From our first meeting, she showed deep interest, compassion, and genuine care for my story. That connection led to meaningful experiences, including my first trip to Western Colorado and participating in a marketing survey with Pulse Marketing.
Though there was a time when she could not take on students because she needed rest, by God’s arrangement, we later worked together. She offered me an opportunity that changed my life forever. One of her most lasting lessons to me was that a PhD is earned not by brilliance alone, but by consistency and persistence.
After I passed my exams, she reached out to discuss my future, showing her continued investment in my growth. She was more than my principal investigator; she was a mother, mentor, and role model. Even during her illness, she consistently preached peace, love, harmony, women’s empowerment, and faith.
Despite her illness, she devoted time to helping me prepare thoroughly for my PhD defense, teaching me to present confidently, speak audibly, and think deeply before responding to questions. After my successful defense, she told me how she was so proud of me, words that remain priceless.
In her final days, she spoke openly about life and death with courage and faith, encouraging positivity, gratitude for each day, appreciation of nature, and living a godly life. She shared her love for reading and meaningful books, including How You Live Is How You Die, which reflected her values.
Prof. Jessica Davis lived an exemplary life that impacted many, especially her students and colleagues. I am a direct beneficiary of her kindness, wisdom, and faith. I am deeply grateful that God used her in my life, and I will always be proud to be associated with her legacy.

I feel truly honored to have had Jessica as both a colleague and a dear friend. I first met her more than 25 years ago at a conference, where she gave a thoughtful presentation on soil health and compost quality. From that first meeting, I enjoyed our conversations and the opportunity to learn from her experiences as we got to know one another.

Over the years, we collaborated on projects and served on each other’s graduate students’ committees. Jessica was always deeply supportive of both students and colleagues. She was always amazing in encouraging those around her to recognize and reach their full potential.

Jessica was a wonderful person—intelligent, a natural leader, compassionate, caring, selfless, and loving. I will miss her deeply.
