Jerry Lenn Ray (AKA) Daddy or Paw Paw, went home to be with Jesus on November 10, 2019. He and his smile was brought into this world on December 1, 1940 in Jerome, AR by his mother, Odie Hillman Ray, and father, John Thomas Ray, both deceased. He had four siblings: Dee Ray (Caswell), Roxie Ray (Kovac), and Porter Ray, and his late brother, Calvin Ray. He attended Eudora High School where he graduated Valedictorian in 1968. He attended Louisiana Tech where he studied engineering and ran track, breaking multiple state records for running hurdles. After spending two years at Louisiana Tech University, he made the decision to join the United States Air Force, where he studied communications. In the fall of 1965, Jerry went on a blind date with a sweet little lady named Maggie Weathers. On February 12,1966, Jerry and Maggie were married in Eufaula at Calvary Baptist Church. They lived in many different cities across the country, but later returned to Eufaula and planted deep roots. They had two daughters, Debbie Ray (Thrash), and Holly Ray (O’Dell). Debbie and her husband, Ted, live in Opelika. Their three children, Baker, Calvin, and Anna Grace adored Paw Paw. Holly and her husband, Jonathan, live in Wetumpka and have one son, Joseph, who cherished the time he had with his Paw Paw. Daddy was an active member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Eufaula. He loved his family and helped anyone in need. He had a smile that lit up any room and never met a stranger. Daddy worked any job necessary to take care of his family. He was a Collier’s Encyclopedia Salesman in his early years of marriage in which many stories still need to be shared. He also worked as a Foreman at Harrison Walker Refractories in Eufaula for more than 20 years and worked as a Foreman at Mineral Manufacturing in Eufaula for 19 years until he retired the day before he died. He worked other various jobs such as selling cars, driving an 18 wheeler, and selling plants. Daddy was kind, gentle, loving, generous, and most importantly he loved Jesus. But, Daddy was certainly a jokester, even until his last breath. After a cardiac arrest on November 7, he was taken to Barbour County Hospital in Eufaula and by ambulance to Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan to Room 444 in the Critical Care Unit. We were able to talk to him, sing to him, hug him, hold his hand, and pray with him. Our entire family formed a circle around him on Sunday afternoon and sang Amazing Grace. At 4:44 pm in Room 444, Daddy took his last breath. This was his way of telling us it was time to let go and everything is going to be ok. He is in heaven with Jesus. We thank all our family and friends who came to visit Daddy and the doctors and sweet nurses at Southeast Alabama Medical Center who gave Daddy so much tender loving care. But, most of all, we thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus, who is faithful to keep His promises. We will see you again Daddy.
