Jerry's obituary

The Celebration of Life Gathering for Dr. Jerry Patricia Austin, 79, of Lubbock, formerly of Troup, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018 at Bethel Bible in Tyler. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017 in Lubbock. Dr. Austin was born Dec. 6, 1938, in Olney, Il, the daughter of Fred Nelch and Lorraine Patrick Gentry. She grew up in Houston, where she met her husband of 52 years, Max Austin. They moved to Lubbock, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree at Texas Tech University in 1960. She began her teaching career in Idalou, Texas. Throughout her life,, she continued her journey of learning by earning her Master's degree in Education and then her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Austin was a committed, caring teacher and diagnostician for over 30 years. She lived in Troup until June 2010. As she would have it, her daughters are sharing her with the School of Medicine at Texas Tech University. Her legacy of teaching continues on. She is preceded in death by her husband, Max Young Austin and parents, Fred Nelch and Lorraine Patrick Gentry. She is survived by her sister, Bobbe Ann Griswold (Lore) of Cranfills Gap, Texas, daughters: Jone Austin of Santa Cruz, CA, Leanne Harrell (Jay) of Lubbock, Amy Kenney (Chris) of Highland Village, TX, seven grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
